Is Infiniti's IPL Line Going To Be More Than Tarted Up NISMOs?

Is Infiniti's IPL Line Going To Be More Than Tarted Up NISMOs?
Now some of you may judge that headline as a bit harsh. But in all reality, it kind of is a legitimate question.

Out of all of the automotive publications covering the launch of Infiniti's IPL division, not many were really asking this. Knowing that its minor engine modifications will be good for only an increase of 18 horsepower and a few pound-feet of torque, what exactly is this IPL G Coupe setting to accomplish?

Some have admitted it is not a BMW M or Mercedes-Benz AMG competitor, which does not take a genius to figure out.

Where this car WILL be putting up a fight is against cars like the 2011 BMW 335iS and Audi S5. Judging from the hardcore nature of our recently driven 2010 Nissan 370Z NISMO, we're assuming this is not merely a few tacked on trim bits and all.

After a deep dive into its press release it actually sounds uncomfortably in line with what NISMO's goals are.

Keeping this in mind, do you think IPL will eventually be built out take down the M's, AMG's and RS' of the world? We've seen them slay the Porsche 997 Turbo, so, I guess Nissan/Infiniti doesn't have much to prove...

...The car will start below $50,000, and Poore is quick to point out Infiniti is walking fine line: add features that are noticeable and desirable while boosting performance--but still keep it reasonably priced. In reality, 18 hp doesn't make IPL a true competitor with Mercedes AMG or BMW's vaunted M line, but it could offer Infiniti more sportiness and cache among enthusiasts.

“This is a start for us,” Poore said. “It allows us to get in the performance market.”

The G37 is a natural fit, and he said the convertible is likely to get IPL trim as well.

“There's no reason why it wouldn't make sense on the convertible,” he hinted...

Nissan can, but didn't. Don't know if they will.

It a good start for Infiniti to eventually move into the BMW M3, MB C-Class AMG63, Audi RS5 and Lexus IS-F market share. I am hoping the next Generation Infiniti G37 sedan and coupe will have a BMW M3, C63 AMG, RS5 and Lexus IS-F fighter.

It wouldn't a bad idea to use the same engine that they have for the current Nissan GT-R and give it around 500 hp. And around 450 lb.ft of torque. And put all of that Nissan GT-R technology into it as well would be a Dream come True for Sportscar fanatic = )

I will first inline to try and get one.

It's not anywhere close to M, AMG, or RS but hey this is one of the best looking cars of 2010 :) Their time will come and they will shine. At least their making moves unlike Acura.

Yes, and unlike Acura, hopefully this IPL will turn out to be more than just an Acura-equivalent 'Type-S' badge. Given that the G is due for replacement in the 2012 or 2013 MY, my bet is that a 400+hp G is on the way to compete with the rest of the gang.
