BMW 335d Six-Month Report
The Diesel Driver's BMW 335d project car just turned six months old and continues to provide "sports-car acceleration with exemplary fuel economy" according to Jonathan Spira, an editor there. The 425 pound-feet of torque apparently don't diminish as the car gets older and help "propel the car to from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 130 km/h (80 mph) in what feels like a split second."

So glad somebody has confirmed what i have been saying on this site for years.

The Diesel Vehicles from Germany provide almost equal levels of performance to its similar displacement Petrol Counterparts yet provide almost 50% better MPG.

I have a theory that diesels disappoint when they have great torque numbers but not quite enough HP for the highway. But with the 335, it has 265 hp so it won't get bogged down--ever--at semi-legal speeds.

On the VW/Audi side I'd like to see the 2.0 TDI engine move to about 2.4 for this very reason...to set it free!

VW has a 170hp version of the 2.0 TDI, but we don't get it here. Even with "only" 140hp the US version has plenty of zip. I wish I had waited for the TDI instead of "settling" for the 2.5l gas engine. It's ok, but I would much prefer the torque of the diesel.

I didn't know about the 170hp version. That extra 30 would make a big difference, and probably not much of a fuel economy hit either.
