Heavy Duty Shootout: Who Makes The Best REAL Work Truck On The Planet?

Heavy Duty Shootout: Who Makes The Best REAL Work Truck On The Planet?
t's been three years since our last Heavy-Duty Shootout, but in that time there has been tremendous change in the pickup truck segment. The Ram trucks' looks and interiors have been redesigned, Ford and GM have introduced new diesel engines, and Ford has also introduced a new gas V-8. Ford and Chrysler have made major exterior and interior changes, and GM has given its trucks all-new chassis and suspensions.

his year's Heavy-Duty Shootout is our biggest comparison test ever. We gathered nine heavy-duty rigs: Three single-rear-wheel three-quarter-ton crew-cab 4x4s with gas engines, three SRW three-quarter-ton crew-cab 4x4s with diesel engines and three dual-rear-wheel one-ton crew-cab long-bed 4x4s with diesel engines.

And none of these trucks will be used on how theyre intended to by over 99% of the public. Pure compensation vehicles.

yes, that's less than 1% of the driving that sports cars see. Thanks for proving my point.

Veyron when will stop trying to attack all things American with your child like comments. These trucks are made for the working class to do a job and put food on the table for many people race cars don't and by the way a few of these trucks get better gas mileage than race cars.

none of these are the really the world's best real "WORK" truck...go anywhere outside of the US, and you'll see that mid-size pick-ups are the ones actually doing the grunt of the work.

Mazda B-Series, Ford Rangers, Toyota (don't know the model [Hilux maybe]) etc are your real work horses. These Rams, Silverados and F150's are just oversized for those cusumers to show that hey, "my truck size compensates for my crock size!"

When I'm ready for an all-around truck, give me a 4-dr Tacoma. It'll do 98% of the needs any of these full-size pick-ups can do and do it greatly, at that.

That is just a laughable statement you cant get a full sheet of ply-wood in a midsize truck thats why in building trades the full size is the king. most modern structures are designed with a full sheets of ply-wood and 4x6 drywall so a midsize truck is only good for carrying workers or tools get it? theses trucks have a true purpose.

And you can forget about a midsized matching a full size in towing the difference is night and day.

I have owned both and used them both beyond the max payload and the most extreme off road, my 1993 F-250 with 35in tires and a 4in lift was the toughest truck I have ever owned, I have carried ridiculously heavy payloads, about double that was intended, and I could hardly tell, my Toyota pu would strain big time. The full size is the work horse. In 3rd world countries they use small trucks because they can't afford big trucks.
