Volvo CEO Promises To Change Carmaker Into A Swedish BMW...What The Hell Is A Swedish BMW?
Volvo Cars Chief Executive Officer Stefan Jacoby said he will reposition the Swedish carmaker as an “upscale” brand as he aims to take on luxury leader Bayerische Motoren Werke AG.
“I’m very committed to bring Volvo to where it belongs, in the top league of the premium manufacturers,” Jacoby told journalists today at Volvo’s Gothenburg headquarters. “We cannot say, ‘just do what BMW is doing.’ We need to find our Swedish-based definition of what Volvo should deliver.”

WTF is a swedish BMW a 3 series with a 5 ylinder engine..lol...j/k...but I see where they are trying to go I think volvo can accomplish that but they will need to step their engineering up a notch. volvo does make a nice car and I think they should have been competing with the likes of BMW and Mercedes.

They will not do it with the technology they launch now. All drive lines in the new S/V60 are way less efficient than what BMW has to offer, the dynamics isn't of the same level and the building quality is lagging.

These companies need to really decide who they want to be when they grow up. Not everyone can, or should be, another BMW.
With that being said, I'd really like to see a company like Volvo create a new market segment focused on decent performance, safety, and ultra-high reliability (12-yr/150,000 mile warranty). That might shake up a few things in the marketplace and get Volvo recognized.

A Swedish BMW is an amazingly good driving Volvo. That is not the current Volvo. However it could be with either RWD or having Mike Cross from Jaguar move over to Volvo. In any case it would involve a very good suspension engineer and many many tests at the Nurburgring. That is the standard bearer as far the ultimate test of a car's suspension.Any other substitute would result in an inferior suspension system. Also Volvo needs to seriously get involved in auto racing as well. The marketing hype from that will certainly boost it's image. The safety image has always been Volvo's fall back. If you want to be like BMW then you must race and test and devote a lot to this. Unless Volvo is comitted to this they will never be the Swedish BMW.Also Volvo's are too heavy. They need to start investing in lighter building techniques such as aluminum, light weight steels and even carbon fiber. This is what Jaguar,Audi and too some extent BMW are doing now. Finally how about Volvo making a real honest to goodness "sportscar" maybe as a "halo" model. That would help in the "Swedish BMW" label. They should use a Porsche Boxster/Cayman as their inspiration.

Sportiest Volvo ever? June 10, 2010 by Patrick Hong
The all-new Volvo S60 is touted by the company as the sportiest Volvo ever. The stylish 4-door sedan comes equipped with an impressive 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 rated at 300 bhp and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. LINK http://blog.roadandtrack.com/sportiest-volvo-ever/
This is the problem, for only $37,700. Again, good luck Stefan Jacoby. Thats all I got to say about that.

Jacoby never says that he promises to change Volvo into a Swedish BMW... what kind of lame "journalism" ethics do you follow? At the least, tell the truth.

I don't think that Volvo is going to change that much. I think only it will be marketed differently.

You guys must not remember the T5 turbos and the 850R. Both were very decent vehicles. I think they should give it a shot.
