Ferrari To Investigate 458 Going Up In Flames Problem

Ferrari To Investigate 458 Going Up In Flames Problem
If you have not been keeping an eye out recently, it seems that Ferraris have been dousing themselves in gasoline and lighting a match.

Well, not exactly.

But they sure as hell have been catching fire left and right across the globe. While high-end, mid-engined exotica have always had a problem with fire, it seems that Ferrari's latest and greatest, the 458 Italia, has had more than its fair share of bad luck.

So much so that the head honchos over in Maranello have decided to look into the 458's problems -- we wouldn't want another Toyota unintended acceleration issue, would we?

Could it be driver's error or a manufacturing defect? We have no clue but we're sure someone will get down to the bottom of this, eventually.

Turns out that we're not the only ones to think that the unusually high number of brand-new Ferrari 458s catching fire, is well, at tad suspicious, to say the least. So does Ferrari which is looking into the potential issue. While at least 10 Ferrari 458s have been involved in accidents since the beginning of the year, Ferrari is investigating three specific cases in which the supercar caught fire. One of those cars was roasted in a storage facility blaze at London's Heathrow airport.

A Ferrari spokesman in the UK has officially confirmed that the company is investigating the cause of the fires. "We are taking all the reports very seriously and are looking into them but we are treating them all as separate incidents," the unnamed spokesman told the Daily Telegraph...

Can you imagine the reaction if any car (other than a European one) combusted spontaneously? Congress would have intervened and the their brand would be tarnished by all and sundry, most notably by the Europhiles. Bloody shameful, but hey, at least you paid more.

Can you image if the story was about the LFA what the haters' reactions would be?

I'd take a torched 458 over an LF-A anyday.

Whilst there is always a risk with such a small sample size, 2 unexplained fires does seem to point in the direction of a design/manufacturing fault of some type, though much more data is needed before a conclusion can be drawn...

they just started investigating? Why didn't start back when the 599 combusted? Why would it take over 10 cars to spontaneously combust for them to look into the matter? Big ferrari fan but kind of disappointed.

And what is up with the amount of wrecked 458s in the past couple of weeks. I swear it seemed like there was an incident everyday. Either it exploded or teh front end got smashed to bits.

Greatly improved the styling there. If I had one I'd probably do the same.
