Automakers Become More Proactive On Recalls
Most vehicle recalls used to happen only after long, drawn-out government inquiries had identified safety defects and required the car companies to fix them.
But in the wake of Toyota’s extensive recalls, automakers are initiating more themselves rather than waiting for government regulators to step in. The new mind-set has produced a flood of recalls, some occurring in reaction to just a few complaints from car owners, or maybe only one. The numbers underscore the sudden shift.

Ya think? After seeing what the US politicians did to the much "beloved" Toyota execs earlier this year, nobody's trying to be raked thru the coals for issues that can be simply repaired. And knowing the economic climate, none of the automakers can risk negative publicity on multiple levels in the media.
If Toyota's rock-solid consumer perception can take a big hit in the zipper --- sales wise ---- political backlash will hurt other carmakers more.
