Would You Be In Favor Of US Autobahn Project?

Would You Be In Favor Of US Autobahn Project?
One of the common bonds between yesterday and today's performance cars is a need for speed. We have a large armada of vehicles that are well-suited for speeds that are double the posted limit. The big problem occurs when a driver stretches out his car's speed to match his car's potential.

A lead-footed driver might become famous for 15 minutes as a participant in a Spike TV program about high speed chases and subsequent arrests.

But what if a long stretch of highway was dedicated to the pure fun of unlimited horsepower meets no-limit road. It would be the start of a beautiful relationship for car guys that want to see what happens when gas pedal crushes floor carpet in their speed machines.

This is long over due we need it whats the purpose of having a factory high perfomance car if all you do is 55mph, 65mph, and 75mph....at that point your high performance car should be a trailer queen because your not using what its made for.

A bad economy and the need for a public works project make interesting bedfellows.

How about a more realistic project: Getting People To Stopping Cruising In The Fast Lane. The driving public in the US needs to be taught that the left lane is for passing. Pass in the left the lane and immediately get back over to the right. The roads will be safer, there will be a drastic drop in road rage, and overall flow will be improved.

There are too many drivers that don't even do the posted speed limit on high/freeways as it is...let alone have a no limit zone.

Don't get me wrong, I would love it, but I think to majority of speed limit and 5-10 under drivers would cause even more crashes than they already do. HAHA.

Keep dreaming....or move to Germany.

The article stated it would not be available to just anyone with a Driver's License. Its true American drivers are nowhere near as disciplined as most European drivers...but that doesn't mean they can't learn to be.

Don't forget that such a project will require a raise in taxes as these roads have to be built and maintained. I believe the governments of Europe pay for the maintenance of their highways with their automotive and fuel taxes.

Then there's also the issue of the driver training. With American driver schools being as crappy as they are, this ain't a good idea. In fact when I drove in Germany I was scared because of all the rules and regulations you need to follow over there and the fact that I wasn't used to the high speeds they travel on the autobahns.

Which is why a project like this can't be taken lightly and should be approached from all angles...including advanced driver training and licensing.

This would be nice but could never happen. Some grass roots road courses popping up in towns across America would be cool though.

Yes but the left lane passing and slower cars keep right have to be heavily enforced. Also no tractor trailers allowed and the vehicle must pass inspection to be allowed on. I wouldnt mind a toll booth or Autobahn US membership either if there was no speed limits.

And also teach people how to use it first! And actually removing the tolls when the liabilities and expenses are accounted for!

Just make sure you structure it with the same rules as the German Autobahn. All trucks in the far right lane. All people going slow in far left lane must let the faster driver pass or get fined.

What would be the perfect location to build this road, if it were passed?

This would take a at least a generation to become somewhat safe and it shouldn't be all about fun. It should be about becoming better drivers as well as promoting people to drive rather than fly. On the whole people in America don't care about driving enough to put down the latte, get off the phone and focus on the actual act or more so discipline of speed. Now if you said a high speed freeway was to be built and a strict school/license was required to partake, I'd be the first one in line.

It's long overdue for US, but I believe it is fiction. Wishful thinking, not practical, Transportation Dept from State and Federal government will be all over on this issue, not to mention budget-wise, political issue, etc. Plus, German Autobahn is unlike any US State Highway or Interstate Freeway, it is constructed differently from my understanding, it will be an overhaul of US highway from North to South, East to West. There was an article on German Autobahn from January 2008 issue of AUTOMOBILE Mag, you guys can flip thru it.

I just drove from Krakow, Poland to Amsterdam, Netherlands last week. Driving the limitless stretches of E30 west of Berlin was a pleasure. I wrapped up the journey in 11 hours.

This will never happen here and I mean never both from a financing standpoint as well as public acceptance. But even if it did, pervasive and flagrant disregard and ignorance for rules of the road would make this meat grinder of a death trap. Can you imagine the imbiciles pulling out in front of you at 120mph+? One is so much more concerned with surroundings on the autobahn that honestly a semi involved conversation was distracting and took away from my ability to react.. here you gun for the left lane, take out your cellphone and chug along. (#^&#%*!!!!)

This could be implemented in certain places as an HOV type lane with a buffer for licenses vehicles only (screened for both driver education and vehicle maintenance) requiring careful road maintenance, with say a $2,500 fine for first offense, $5,000 for second and so forth but mostly I agree with sezwho: c*cktease.

@ America

You're right but you do not go far enough. As an American, we first need to be honest with ourselves and get some people off the road. I'm not going to elaborate, but use your own bias(we all have it). After this step, we need to have a formal re-education of the driving public for better and consistent driving practices. Only after this point, and it is financially feasible, should we even consider an Autobahn in the United States.

On a side note, apart from the thickness of the driving surface layer, a great many highways(aleast in Los Angeles) were designed to be "Autobahn" like.

Sorry, but I have zero faith in the general public's ability to drive safely at 70MPH let alone 100 MPH. One of the requirements: NO KIDS UNDER 21. You can predict 4 stupid rich kids in a Panamera going 150MPH and killing innocents at midnight.

One of the reasons Autobahn, Autostrada et al work in Europe is because of their stringent driver training requirements. American freedom to drive would be infringed upon greatly by any such measure. Be careful what you guys ask for because it may come with such things as provisional licences (preventing new drivers from entering the highways for a particular time), etc, and may require defensive driving courses to be passed, higher minimum driving ages, etc.
