Audi's New A6 Uncloaked, But Is It Bold Enough?

Audi's New A6 Uncloaked, But Is It Bold Enough?
MEET the Audi with something for everyone! Our exclusive image reveals the look of the next A6, which features cues from the latest A8, A7 and A5 models.

The exterior styling, penned by design heads Wolfgang Egger and Stefan Sielaff, will incorporate the usual Audi hallmarks such as intricate head and tail-lights. Its interior will be typical of the brand, too – solidly built, with a sober design, and filled with technology including touchpad sat-nav input on high-spec models.

The car will use Audi’s latest modular MLB platform, which underpins the A4, A5 and Q5 in steel form, and A8 in aluminium. In the A7 and A6, the chassis is 20 per cent aluminium to reduce weight, but keep costs in check. As it allows engines to be mounted further back, the newcomer promises to be the best handling A6 ever.

If the lines are too clean, it'll remind the average consumer of VW if they don't look close enough. Audi is supposed to be the upscale/luxury (mid)mass-production product for VW...they have to be a bit more distinctive. Otherwise, it'll be like what Lincolns were to Ford models (modest rehash designs for much higher prices).

I said it's good. it's not amazing. it's not no 5 killer or M killer. it's just good. it doesn't hurt the eyes but it's not impressive either. I honestly didn't expect Audi's signature to take them very far. if they continue in this path, though, the next A6 will be less than good and not worthy of my comments.

You evidently haven't seen the last few models. Oh wait I beat you drive a Lexus. They tend to never change. They just keeping adding more chrome and making the slanted L bigger.

I'm sorry B7Fan, did you say "it reminds you of a Mitsubishi", you must be looking at the Mitsu ads. That's would be like saying the new 5 series looks like a Jaguar. Oh wait, it does!!!

I'm not sure if I like it. For some reason the proportions seem off -- it has a weird shrunken look to it, like it's not as long as it's supposed to be. Replace the grill and it would look exactly like a Volvo.

That's amazing. You must own a Volvo. The grill is the same grill they have had for 100 years. They're not changing anything to look like the other manufactures, it's the other manufactures making changes to look like them.

Strangely... It looks disappointingly small and insignificant in these pics.

Let's hope that it has more presence 'in the metal'.

It looks like you need glasses and a better monitor. The LCD's have came down in price. This should allow you to replace your CRT.

This is a computer rendering. The real A6 will be much more unoriginal. It will look a large A4, or a small A8, or a sedan version of the A7...which all look the same. Zzz.

So basically what you're saying is that Audi is doing exactly what BMW is doing.

Old News

Na not at all, the BMW designs are more cohesive, in that there are some similar design features, but each series has its own unique look. You wont mistake the 5 and the new 7. but they certainly are not different sizes of the design....like the Audi a4 and a8.

MBCLS07MBCLS07 - 9/3/2010 4:01:39 PM

So when Audi models appear similar to one another it's "unoriginal...all look the same. zzz" and when BMW does the same it's called being "cohesive"?

merce63amg, you'd make a politician proud with your manipulation of language. The truth is, for better or worse, both Audi and BMW stick rather tenaciously to a design language across their model line. But to pretend that it's a negative when Audi does it and a positive when it's BMW is nothing more than dishonest bias.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 9/3/2010 4:24:31 PM

MBCLS, there is design continuity in models from both brands. But most people can see a 3-series and tell it's not a 5-series or 7-series (i.e. they share cues but don't look identical). I don't think that's the case with Audi -- I think most people wouldn't correctly differentiate the modrls unless they're side by side. Even I have trouble, and I like Audis. From the front they're almost indistinguishable to the average consumer.

OccarnutOccarnut - 9/5/2010 6:17:23 PM

The A7 looks the "same" as an A4 or A8? When have you seen an A7, or seen one next to an A4 or an A8? For that matter, when have you seen an A4 and an A8 side by side?

"BMW designs are more cohesive." merce63amg
I have driven by a lot of "all-new" 7 series thinking that they are 5 series. I would'nt say that is cohesive. I would say that it's cost effective. BMW's using the same platform for all it's car. Just stretching them a little on every model. Well, unfortunately for you, you can't do that on an A8. It's made of aluminum instead of the cheap stuff, and you can't use an A4, A6, A7 platform for it. This removes it from the rest of the "cars in its class" because of this extremely expensive design.

Not a good rendering. Compare it with the spy shots from last month- the headlights don't match and if you look at the top of the grill on the prototype it doesn't match the rendering either.

Fordish. You need to stick to driving Fords. I know you want it to be a Ford so you can afford it, but I'm sorry to tell you that it's not looking "Fordish".

It's a bit dodgy when you post more than half the original article from which you're posting this photo. You should consider, at least, writing your own synopsis and linking off. Instead of giving your readers negligible reason to even follow the link.

It's a DUD so far until I see more photos. It looks a lot smaller at first glance. I like the outgoing model though but Audi's have never been "bold" or beautiful. They've been nice and conservative but not a Benz flash or a Bimmer edge.

The shoulder line is more pronounced, the car is not as short as this rendering depicts..the car has a more "muscular" appearance than the rendering suggests. The headlights are not correct.
