The best Mercedes in history?

After more than 20 years of existance still the best off-roader in the world.... RESPECT

Couldn't agree more. My brother has one and the off road abilities are out of this world.

That was the orginal plan. Last I heard was that the production was extended by 10 years.

Hard to improve a proven 4x4. In stock trim it is hard to beat. Hummer H1 will eat it alive...yeah yeah I seen pics of G towing a H1 out of mud, but the G did not and cannot traverse what the H1 did and its easy to make conclusions seeing pics after the fact. Unfortunately MB is not selling enough G's and want to refreshen the line with the GL. I only seen one G in actual use and it was fun splashing mud all over it with my F250 diesel beast and treating it like my B****H, but would smoke me if mine was stock.

Hmmm...thoughts of Lamborghini SUV comes to mind...GL killer??? LM005? Always thought the Lambo gave AM General allot of ideas on the original H1.

The G is a Classic and Ive seen and driven my uncle's in some of the worst conditions possible but dont discount the H1 I'm a Former US Marine and Humvee's do amazing things and they dont come close to the civillian H1 in which you can adjust everything from shocks to tire pressures from the inside of the cabin that would have been great in our Humvees......A/C would have been nice in the desert as well!

I 've seen those pictures of the G pulling the H1 out of the mud. We can go back and forth on which one is best. The H1 might have a slight advantage since the G is more road friendly. I'm not sure how they compare when slightly modified for off-road use only.
However, I do know that the Mercedes UNIMOG would eat both for breakfast.

I hear Mercedes will extend the life on this car and one will be in the pan to create a new one. They say we should expect it to keep its boxy appearance. I rather like this Merc. I think it has presense and takes you back to when Mercedes were engineered and not just designed to cut costs to save money. I used to own a W-124 E-Class.....THE BEST MERECEDES EVER!! I never had a problem with it, the interior still looked new til the day of its poor demise ( A dumbass woman in her Ford Expedition, while chattin on her cell phone, decided to plow into the back of me.) I miss that car and really have been trying to find a good pre-owned one (though I can afford an new one, but nothing was like that Class of Mercedes) so if anyone knows anybody with a 1994-96 W-124 E-Class let me know!!

Unimog is bas a$$! I am hoping Hummer can adapt some of that 4x4 technology.

Traded it last year for a CLS, just in time to avoid the glut of SUVs hitting the market. Despite some claims re H1, there are places that a G will go that an H1 won't make it simply due to its width. And the G is the ONLY vehicle that comes standard with THREE locking diffs. The G is all but unstoppable off road. On road, it a 26 year old truck with the aerodynamics of a cinder block. I drove coast-to-coast in mine averaging 14 mpg @ 70+mph... and every stop for whatever reason brought out the Windex and paper towels. No bug ever survived a chance encounter with a G wagen at speed! The Unimog, however, is KING!
