EXCLUSIVE: 00R Drives Lexus' Latest Hybrid, The CT200h

EXCLUSIVE: 00R Drives Lexus' Latest Hybrid, The CT200h
Sometimes when you are a spy you don't have to do all of the work. A great example of such an unparalleled opportunity happened just yesterday morning.

While going to get my haircut downtown in New York City, I wound up seeing something that I swore deceived me. Was that just a Lexus CT200h? Not one but two of them? What?!

I was quoted as saying "Holy Sh!$#"

Long story short, Lexus is having the World Preview Tour for the all-new CT200h. The tour consists of two Euro-spec prototype vehicles which you can -- unbelievably -- test drive. As far as I know, not even the press has had the chance to give the car a ride.

Luckily, I was in the right place at the right time but there was one hang up. I didn't have my proper camera. So, I swallowed my pride and took a few shots for the Spies with a bright pink point and shoot, thanks to my significant other. Although I am ashamed of the quality of the photographs, they are better than nothing and I have an idea what to get her for our anniversary.

Take a look at the 2012 Lexus CT200h Photo Gallery.

So after some "paperwork," I mean some forms filled out on an iPad, 00R was behind the wheel of the all-new hybrid.

First things first, looking around the interior it seems quite upscale. Its design is definitely European-inspired and everything feels well put together. Mind you this was a pre-production prototype; usually these car's build quality isn't so hot. Not the case in the CT200h.

Additionally, the interior seemed relatively roomy. Being 6'8 and 235 pounds, I fit fine without feeling claustrophobic. Granted, headroom was lacking and if I had not just gotten a haircut I probably would have been scraping the headliner.

Poking and prodding the center stack's switchgear, the interior features appear to be the standard Lexus running gear. If you have ever driven a Lexus, you will not have to relearn how to turn on the heated seats. But considering I did not have more than 15 minutes with the car, I was only preoccupied with one thing, driving.

Getting it turned on and down the block, you quickly realize that it feels a lot like a third-generation Toyota Prius and Lexus HS250h that has been refined even more. Of course there is the usual hesitation when setting off from a stop, but it is a hybrid.

The one dial you will want to know about is the silver one in the middle of the center stack. That one controls the driving dynamics of the car. When you turn it to the right, it puts the Lexus into "Sport" mode. The gauge cluster's ambient light turns red and you begin to feel the differences immediately. Steering wheel weighting gets heavier and its drive becomes more responsive.

It does not drive as direct as a BMW but the steering feel is very similar to an Audi without the heft an Audi usually carries.

Over New York's infamous bumps, potholes and miscellaneous craters, the CT200h fairs out reasonably well. The suspension is on the tauter side but it didn't seem overkill. Definitely would need more time with the vehicle to be more conclusive.

Obviously the most important part about any hybrid car is what kind of MPG it reels in. The CT's mileage is still up in the air and individuals working the event didn't really have any answers. But I did hear that MPG somewhere in the 40s is being tossed around. How much of that is valid, 00R does not know.

If the CT can do better than the HS250h and Honda CR-Z then it will be in the clear. Now, if it can hit the third-generation Prius' numbers it may be a miracle.

At the end of the day, our brief drive of the Lexus CT200h was a pleasurable one. Clearly, we would need more time to get a more concrete feel for the car but it definitely paints us a nice picture of what Lexus had in mind when it created the CT.

Wow... they told everyone about the events except the press?

And I assume that Lexus had to build these vehicles carefully because the public does not understand the meaning of "pre-production". I'm glad you enjoy the car though. Getting close to the Prius numbers would be outstanding, imo because it doesn't need to.

Even with the lack of the hidden rear windshield wiper, I feel that the CTh is better than its competitors by a large margin. Of course, I have yet to test drive it - waiting for the event to arrive in LA in just over 2 weeks!

It's too soon to tell if it's a good car, but it is definitely heading in the right direction.

Let us know what you think when you give it a spin when it comes to LA.

"Even with the lack of the hidden rear windshield wiper, I feel that the CTh is better than its competitors by a large margin."

How so? The expensive Toyota badge up front makes it automatically better or something?

@Willis: In a way, it does.

Its exterior just doesnt look right for some reason and certainly not something from a luxury brand but the interior at least in pics I really like it looks high quality, modern kinda futuristic

Its interior has a very Euro vibe to it. I can't figure out what it is, if its the large, wide center stack -- that reminds me of the F10 5-Series -- or what...

agreed. exterior looks very econo-car. rear lines in particular remind me of an old honda civic.

what does this car compete with?

Ugly. Seriously ugly. It looked decent in the press photos, but here...UGLY.

i was being kind in comment above. agree, it's really ugly. and i have no idea how this cars fits with the lexus brand? what it competes with? or who is going to buy it?

If they ditched the hybrid and offered a turbo 4 with a stick I'd really look at it. Design is very nice, especially for people who are hatchback aficionados looking to upgrade. GT 4 doors are not the option and the A3 needs more to be appealing.

If they did that it would be a turbo Toyota Matrix GTS.

So its an HS wagon?

Definitely not an HS.

The HS has more of a tank-like feel to it. A bit of heft.

The CT feels more agile and on its toes.

Did it really have to look like 'this'?

I see that Lexus still has some lessons to learn in designing ergonomically correct high quality switch gear. The switches in the center stack are all flat and have no tactile differentiation. The electric parking brake switch, climate control switches and audio control switches can only be identified by looking down at them. And there are still switches placed low near the driver's left knee. Also those heated seat knobs! They look like they came from a Radio Shack parts bin.

why? it's slower than a prius. doesn't match the MPG of the prius. and will cost more than a prius.

BUY A PRIUS. unless the lexus badge matters to you more than price, fuel efficiency and acceleration.

Hmm... I don't wanna hate this Lexus like do their previous offerings. Its actually not that bad looking.

I'm really surprised that they brought this car to the US. It's not that it's bad looking or anything, it's just the wrong market. This needs to be an AWD, diesel car for Europe only... not a heavy hybrid for the US market... It will sell margins at first, but just like the HS250h, when the hype fades down, I think they'll start collecting flat spots on their tires sitting at local Lexus dealers.

00R have you recently been in the Toyota Matrix and if so can you compare the two? I have a sneaking suspicion that this is simply a hybrid Matrix in a fancy suit.

I have to say, this car is HIDEOUS. While im in love with the interior and build-quality (a given with Lexus), the exterior is just plain gross

It's longer than I thought and so backseat should be useful. Not quite sure what this is to be exactly though. Guess everyone is still experimenting how to put hybrid and sports together.
