Review: 2007 Porsche Turbo

Given the foot of snow that blanketed Stuttgart just two days prior to our arrival, Porsche worried about plunging us into a baptismal of slush—and turning our first sneak-preview taste of the mighty 997 Turbo into an adventure more to do with finding the limits of its all-wheel drive than its all-around righteousness—and shod our sample cars in the black-ice-thwarting compound.

From our very first foray out of Zuffenhausen and into the surrounding countryside, weaving through cornfields and whizzing by cow pastures, we could easily tell this Turbo would out-Turbo all that came before.

The power comes on fast and smooth, with great gobs of torque found wherever you ask for it, in any gear and at any revs, a seemingly endless supply of tire-twisting propulsion. And all of it can be had with barely a hint of turbo lag. Amazing stuff.

The Hitler connection to VW, etc. is simply a matter of circumstance. You have to keep in mind that nearly all of the great scientific research on this planet was coming from Germany in the 19th and early 20th Century. People like Rudolph Diesel and a score of other mathematicians, rocket scientists, chemists and nuclear theorists to name a few were laying the groundwork long before Hitler got his crazy idea. He just took over what had been started in WWI, a mechanical war machine and poured research dollars into it to make it better. The autobahn was built to aid a country at war, not so rich Germans can drive their RUF Porsches 200mph. Likewise, the Champs D Elysees was built such as it is so Napoleon could cover his ass and defend his city. All I'm trying to say is that the technology was already there and would have been exploited Hitler, or no Hitler. WWI was the real catalyst. 
 
Back on topic, the new Turbo Porsche looks great. You get a lot for 122K and the car can be modded to be one of the fastest in the world for another 200K. The only cars that can give a RUF Porsche a run for it's money, like the new V16 Bugatti, cost over 1 million dollars. I personally like the look of a Ferrari better, but a finely tuned Porsche can dust any street legal Ferrari, and for a lot less money.
