EXCLUSIVE: AutoSpies Brings YOU The Latest Info On The Audi R8 GT
Sometimes, being wrong can be a beautiful thing. In my case, this is a fact.

Turns out -- thanks to an AutoSpies tipster -- we have exclusive information that the U.S. will be receiving 90 copies of the hardcore Audi R8 GT.

Even when you're a spy, your barometer can be wrong. I forecasted the R8 GT would NOT make it to our shores back in June.

I'll let the information do the rest of the talking here. Better make sure to hit up those dealers ASAP because these 90 units will not last very long, that I can be sure of...

Dear 001,

Oh do I have a scoop for you fellow spy! It turns out that the R8 GT will be making an appearance in the United States! Although the US will get only 90 units of the 333 global production.

Obviously Audi will not be able to send every dealer an R8 GT, so the company has said that it will base its allocation on previous R8 sales performance.

Look for the R8 GT to make its US debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

Text from the Audi note follows:

The R8 GT is a breathtaking example of the best in Audi design and engineering.  This limited production vehicle – currently in the final phases of testing and nearing production – will be officially unveiled at the 2010 Paris Auto Show at the end of this month.  The U.S. public debut of the R8 GT is planned for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in early January 2011.

Inspired by the Audi R8 LMS GT3 racecar, the R8 GT is a very limited production vehicle that is more powerful, lighter and faster than the highly acclaimed R8 5.2 (V10) FSI quattro Coupe that was introduced in mid-2009 in the U.S.  The R8 GT receives substantial exterior modifications aimed to enhance high-speed handling and is powered by a modified 5.2-liter V10 FSI engine that produces 560 hp (35 more hp than the R8 5.2 FSI) and is mated to the R tronic sequential manual transmission.  Extensive use of carbon fiber body parts in the R8 GT results in reducing vehicle weight by approximately 100 kilograms (220 lbs.) from the R8 5.2 FSI quattro Coupe (final U.S. spec vehicle weight is pending).  The added power and reduced weight results in an improved acceleration of 3.6 seconds 0-62 mph and a top speed of 199 mph (compared to 3.9 seconds and 196 mph top speed for the R8 5.2 FSI quattro).  The estimated base price for R8 GT is not final, however is anticipated to be less than $225,000.  Additional vehicle information and images are included in the following pages.

Total worldwide R8 GT volume is 333 units, with 90 units slated for sale in the U.S.  While Audi of America is pleased that the U.S. market was successful in securing a high production share, unfortunately such a limited total volume cannot adequately satisfy dealer or customer demand for this unique vehicle.  Audi of America will allocate standard dealer production allocation for the R8 GT based on previous R8 sales performance.  Those dealers receiving an R8 GT production allocation will be notified as such within the next several weeks.

Despite the relatively small volume of R8 GT vehicles destined for the U.S. market, we hope all Audi R8 dealers will view favorably the excitement and interest that the R8 GT will bring to the R8 model line specifically and to the Audi brand in general in the United States.

C'mon Audi, I know that there's at least 15 extra horses in there.

Yeh but then it cannot be more powerful than an LP"560"....I reckon it is the same engine as both of them have identical output....how will they differentiate the engines? different covers? Ohh NVM...they both cost around the same - over 200K....I will still go with the Lambo as a Lambo is a Lambo but remove the badges and the Audi is undoubtedly the better car esp. for regular driving and longer distances - More practical too!

how is the audi better for regular driving and longer distances if they are essentially the same car? Is this a brand perception thing?

Joe, the R8 and the Gallardo are not essentially the same car, even though they are based on similat platforms. The R8 is the best daily driving supercar in the world, tested by most of the reputable sources. The cabin is more comfy, the seats are better, the suspension is more comfy - the Lambo is just sportier.
Cheers.

have you sat in a gallardo or an r8? the r8 is nothing to write home about. It's really quite bland, while the gallardo provides a far more plush interior. But if you get into the technical details. The v10 in both of these cars and the drive train is almost identical. So yes they are similar platforms. lol did you expect audi to make up a platform when one already existed within the company?

Dude do you know most practical things are rather bland? The Lambo is sportier and has a plusher interior, no doubts about it, it is also faster because it is lighter. Not as practical as the Audi as the Audi is more comfortable over longer distances as it is more spacious, the seats are also more forgiving than in the Lambo and the R8 is higher which means easier ingress-egress. The R8 is an Audi which means cheaper services and spare parts; did I mention cheaper insurance too. Also, being a daily driver - Which one is more prone to attention of the wrong type? The Audi or the Lamborghini?

Did I ever say that I expected Audi to have a new platform? Do you usually like twisting words around and also sound retarded in the process?

(P.S. I am chief engineer in a dealership and I have driven both cars numerous times; I have also raced them a few times in Vegas, Cali and Europe; such comments shouldn't be coming from someone who drives a Pontiac (great car!btw are they still alive?)

Two things.

1. How can you comment on cheaper parts and services in the audi when you yourself have just agreed that mechanically they are the same platform and use the same parts?

2. Really? You're an Engineer and you work for a stealership lol! I hope my degree doesn't take me down that sorry road.

I feel there is no point talking to a flickering lightbulb about something which you will not understand:-

(1)Audi has cheaper parts and services than Lamborghini BECAUSE IT IS AN AUDI, they will not charge you a premium for the Italian heritage...If mechanically they are the same platform and the same car - they should also be sold at the same price, but they are not - So, your argument has no validity. Mechanically, a Bentley Continental Flying Spur is also very similar to a Phaeton/A8? Same prices?

(2) OMG you sound so funny, I cannot stop laughing. I am AN ENGINEER in a dealership not a sales guy and it is a dealership for Exotic Cars. I am pursuing a Master's which will land me a better job anyway and I don't feel the need to disclose any more details as I simply don't know you.

-End of Discussion-

1) valid point, I concede.
2) I still think it's hilarious that you are touting the fact that you are an engineer and work for a stealership in the same sentence. :) Hopefully your masters degree will get you somewhere worthwhile.
