Toyota announced today that it is in talks with Daimler, in order to supply parts but also technology for company’s upcoming hybrid vehicles. For many of you folks, this comes as a surprise, as Daimler has been working with Bmw on hybrid development.

sounds like Daimler is playing the field by taking technology from the fore runners in hybrid tech and then maybe combining/improving existing technology

Daimler is already in the alliance that produced GM's 2 mode hyrbid (same system was used in the short lived Dodge Durango hybrid. I believe BMW was also in at some point but I do not know about the utilization and implementation of that.

So does that mean they are giving up on their 2 mode system?
Interesting! I remember that alliance was made because those manufacturers felt they were at a disadvantage with Toyotas hybrid knowledge and wanted to combine efforts to make something better.
Playing the field??? Don't know if that makes sense. At what cost do you play the field? Toyota won't part with their technology cheaply. Makes me think they are not seeing the 2 mode as the way to go.

I don't think Toyota will supply all their knowledge, just enough to get Daimler going. Probbaly first generation.. whilst Toyota is probbaly working on the 4th gen system..
