SPIED: Subaru/Toyota's FT-86 Joint Project Gets Snapped

SPIED: Subaru/Toyota's FT-86 Joint Project Gets Snapped
Probably one of the more intriguing collaborations in the auto world currently is the Subaru and Toyota joint project. The plan's mission is to bring a sporty coupe to both brands.

But from the latest crop of spy photographs, it looks like Subaru is looking at putting a nice turbocharged motor under the hood, as evidenced by the traditional, Subaru hood scoop. According to Autocar's source, the front-mounted intercooler was visible.

The mule appears to be in its early stages of development, so we cannot be sure if the Impreza body work will make it to production or if its merely undergoing some testing.

These spy pictures reveal Subaru’s plans to equip its upcoming rear-wheel-drive coupé with a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine.

A cut-and-shut Impreza body covers the modified Legacy platform with Impreza rear suspension of the test mule spied in Death Valley...

Looks like a Subaru WRX hatch that got hacked. Hopefully they make the changes to make it more like the drawings hard edginess more than a BMW 1-series.

I would prefer this to be a Subaru badged car as Subaru has great quality and heritage in terms of handling and performance. Toyota's overall image is boring and bland. Subaru's exciting and superbly executed (plus it's sort of a premium-niche) type of brand.

The article says it's coming under both brands.

Definitely the Subaru based on the wheels/grill. It also looks like it has an RX-8 style rear door on it. Pretty nice

This could be interesting. I'm not holding my breath but I hope they can knock this one out of the park. Toyota just needs to supply the cash and leave the performance aspect to Subaru.

Looks really stubby, and also like it suffers from the freakishly flat hood-thing that the Impreza/WRX does (yes, I know it has a boxer engine, but still - it's weird).

Joe and Nostradamus: You really think that this is the final product?

heck no, I'm saying the proportions are all awkward. I knew the Panamera would look awkward to me when I saw it in Camo, and now I'm pretty sure this thing will be awkward as well. Not because of any details... you can't see them... but because of the shape...

The Subaru version will be a barnstomer while the Toyota version will be a tepid, harmless, underperforming, College Girl car. Anyone want to bet?
