A Rich Man's Tiguan? Porsche Still At Work On Sub Cayene SUV

A Rich Man's Tiguan? Porsche Still At Work On Sub Cayene SUV
Despite the recent weight-loss regimen applied to the all-new 2011 Porsche Cayenne,  and despite denials of the project at least once a year  since 2007, the engineers in Stuttgart are working on an even smaller SUV according to the latest reports. The new model will likely be based on an existing VW Group platform, which might mean a more aggressive treatment of the same core hardware that underpins the Audi Q5.

Don't do it Porsche!! There used to be a day when seeing a Porsche was a special event but now there looking to become an everyday car. Porsche used to be a car that CEO's and the very successful had now there becoming more common and as the CEO of Porsche would love this because of sales figures to me IMO as a consumer it makes the brand less special. I would love to see what Jeremy Clarkson would say to this, he already is not a big fan of Porsche. If a few more cars by Porsche come out they will have more models then GM!

Some times there's no control. The world's changing and the market's changing. It all boils down to the currency symbol. Whatever makes them money they will do and if it's volume they have to sacrifice it then they have to do it. Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston are funded heavily to keep that. It's risky for the owners to keep them low volume. Who knows if/when Porsche's high end competition will end up doing the same.

I am a proud Porsche owner and don't look at the mainstream models. I'm all about the 911, CGT, and future high performance models. They still make great quality cars. I'm not affected by the whole VW 50% ownership and what not. Lamborghini could be using Audi developed motors and no one would give a rats ass about it. Same sh!t, different pile.

I like the idea of a sub-Cayenne SUV offering. Though I like the initial size of the newest Cayenne, I'd appreciate a smaller version that would have a powerful (or turbo) V6 and maybe a high-end version with a smooth V8.

I like the Audi Q5, but it hasn't been known as a particularly "muscle-y" SUV offering. Porsche would be the brand to do it right if given the chance.

VW is slowly killing off Porsche's brand Identity.

First off Porsche's philosophy has always been the practical exotic sports car that you could use every day. This goes back to the 356. Further even when Ferry Porsche was still alive Porsche has toyed with a 4dr car. They almost created one back in the early 90's but had to scrap it at the last minute due to their financial issues. Then came along Wendel Weidiking who promptly instituted the "Toyota" process of efficient production and ultimately saved the company. My point is that becoming more main stream was somthing that Porsche has been striving to get to for many years.Porsche had only become a wealthy company because they created the Cayenne. If they had stuck with sports cars they probably have been a "sport option" for engine and suspension on VW's. Porsche still has a strong identity. It is simply now proceeding along with multiple products as it would have been to stay independent. Now it's simply expanding so it can show more profit for
VW.Face it this is the way of the world. Look what is now happening to Lotus. At the Paris motor show we will see the premier of the new "Elite" a $180,000 3600 LB front engined super car with the Lexus LFA engine and hybrid drive. Why do you think this has come about. Answer- because parent company Proton wants Lotus to start making a profit. They have determined that there is money to be made in this price range of car without having to have a huge volume. My prediction-Look for a 4dr Lotus in the not too distant future. Getting back to Porsche. VW wants Porsches volume at 150,000 or more per yr. You can't get there on only high end sports cars. So now the shared platform for the cheaper( yeh right ) entry level mid engined sports car shared with VW and Audi, the smaller "Roxster" Suv that Porsche has been toying with even before they were bought by VW,a front engined 2dr coupe based on the Panamera and my prediction a smaller 3 series sedan fighter. It's simply a matter of time. But if you could pick the brains of the "early" Porsche brains and managers I believe they always dreamed of becoming a "full" model line car company. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the economy had not tanked and Porsche's stock had not plumetted.

It'll be way too expensive, but damn if that's not the cutest little suv. It were reasonably quick with some form of hybrid system, I would consider it. It has to handle though.

I like it, but this will mostly appeal to women, its too cute. Get with the times all you Porsche fanatics, its a different day. Its all about market share, revenue streams and sales and this will increase all 3 for Porsche.

I know the market dictates demand, but wtf is up with all these luxury or performance "cute-utes". Not a big SUV fan, but I do appreciate Range Rovers, ML's, X5's, and Q7's for being attractive, not at all sure what the purpose of X3's, LR-2's and Q5's are. I didn't think the Cayenne was attractive to begin with, but now they're making it smaller too?
