Who Is the REAL King Of The Hill? 2011 Corvette ZR-1 vs. 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

Who Is the REAL King Of The Hill? 2011 Corvette ZR-1 vs. 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo
Talk about a reversal of fortune. For how many years now has the Corvette versus 911 story gone something like this: Yes, the Porsche is faster around a track, built better, and more fun to drive; stops shorter; pulls more gs around a skidpad; and is the waking dream of every member of our staff. But...in a straight line, the Corvette will kick the German's engine-stuffed ass back to Deutschland? I'd say close to 50 years now, give or take.

Well, what if we were to tell you that on the dragstrip a 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo that gives up two cylinders, more than 2 liters of displacement, and well over 100 horsepower to the Chevy absolutely gobsmacked the stuffing from a USDA Prime Corvette ZR1? On the flip side of that same coin, would you be willing to believe a General Motors product -- one that quite literally began melting after a few hours in the hot California sun -- not only beat but flat-out embarrassed a Nurburgring'd all-star twin-turbo AWD Porsche on a tricky, challenging, high-speed racetrack? What's next, a black president?

Who has the more inflammatory titles: 009 or 00R?

weird... motor trend also reports 1/4mile times of 11.2s and that's with huge wheelspin.

How did they come up with 11.7s? Is it just so they have a story to tell?

I know two ZR1 owners, one is a member of my immediate family. Neither has a toupee. In the flesh the car is simply gergeous and having been in it, I don't doubt a skilled pilot could get it down the quarter in under 10..

Of course I meant in the 10s.

The ZR1 is definitely a beast. But for my money I think i'd still pick up the turbo. There's just something about it.

and for those who didn't read the full article, the Porsche's turbos malfunctioned and it could not complete the test. so on this particular day, the Porsche wins on straight-line acceleration, but the Corvette corners better, is faster around the track, and more reliable.

911 Turbo without a doubt! Especially the Turbo S. Yes both cars may have similar performance figures but once you look at Interior quality the Porsche wins hands down!

How about in terms of reliability and cost? The turbo did break while being tested...

GTR? Too funny. Both the P car and the ZR1 will romp away from a GTR. Even a lowly Z06 will show its tail lights to the Nissan.

Uh no. I think that near 200hp may have helped on the POWER circuit.

z06 has 25hp more then the gtr, and even without the benefits of awd pulls on the gtr in a straight line. I like the site you posted.

I've always subscribed to the school of nothing sounds better than a Ferrari at about 8000 RPMs but this Corvette now has me saying that my two favorite sounds are a screaming Ferrari and a ZR1. wow

@Joe_Limon: Makes me wish today's F1 engines were a balanced V16 that revved to 500rpm. Makes me think today's F1 should be able to do it with little wear and guzzling.

These tests honestly mean very little to me because I know that there is no way I can push either car close to these numbers on a track, and more importantly, for the 99% of the time I would be driving it, I'd never come close to even 80% of its limit. So, at this level, I'd choose based on looks, and that's the 911.

Some of us here would prefer to "pick up" the 911 for the money. Actually a tow truck would likely be doing the picking up. Am I the only one that noticed that the Corvette was the only one to actually survive this event? I recall Jeremy Clarkson saying on a follow-up episode of his time in the US with the ZR1 that it started to fall apart after a few days. This 911 fell apart on the very first day. TWO blown turbos?!? Oh hell no...The major selling point of the car (the turbo and subsequently the performance) fail in the face of a Corvette. And some are still bitching about the interior of the 'Vette. Give it a rest already. The cost of a pair of Recaros (and fuzzy dice, if you must) for the ZR1 are FAAAAR cheaper than those blown turbos. I guarantee it.
