148 MPH Chevrolet Caprice Dominates During Police Evaluations
The team behind General Motors Co.'s new police car is pleased with preliminary test results showing the Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle is fastest among 2011 models.

The Caprice, which returns to the police market after 15 years, was up against a new Dodge Charger Police Pursuit and the perennial Ford Crown Victoria Interceptor in annual testing by the Michigan State Police Precision Driving Unit. The results serve as a buyer's guide for police organizations for fleet purchases.

why can't civilians have it? when Pontiac died, they should have reincarnated the G8 as the new Impala SS.
won't they sell enough of these police cars to make the platform profitable enough to invest in building one for the consumer market? it would certainly need a more attractive/aggressive grill and headlamp treatment.
The G8's real-world combination of size, interior space, performance, and ride comfort would also make a good full-size Cadillac, if they dress it properly and give it a top-notch interior.

The plant that is producing the Caprice doesn't have enough capacity to support the volume a consumer market Caprice would sell.

GM forgot to add in the Ford Taurus PI in their results which bested the Caprice in MANY categories. AWD TT V6 for the win on this one. Thye are making a stupid choice if they go for a car that is VERY easily spotted from a distance as NOBODY owns one other than a cop.

Notice the Crown Vic, iconic in that anytime you see one on the highway you think trooper or UC and slow down. Why GM is pushing a car that is already old in another country on the police force is beyond me. And why the PD is not stepping up to a new age where AWD and TT V6 engines best RWD V8's is mind boggling.

@Whelan: Let me address some of your cocnerns.

1) AWD and twin turbo engiens are (say it with me) delicate. The typical crusier does not need the added complexity of these systems. Additionally, Ford is forgetting that the front drive cop car idea has been tried and has really been a dismal failure. It worked in Robocop, but not in real life. The truth is that since Ford sold Jaguar, they really don't have a car-based rear-drive chassis to offer, unless they do what GM did and look to Australia for the Falcon. I don't think they even believe their own hype with this one.

2) It doesn't matter that nobody else but the police will drive the Caprice. It will have colours, lights, and words all over it that say POLICE! I highly doubt that "stealth" is a priority for the typical cruiser. No police department would use a Caprice (or a Crown Vic) as an undercover vehicle. That's only done in the movies.

3) The chassis underneath the Caprice is not old, according to you, but is the latest version of the Zeta platform, unveiled in 2004, its latest update having been done in 2009.

car based RWD would be the Mustang and they can easily update the Crown Vic drivetrain.

It's funny when BMW offers turbo or Audi has TT it is amazing and great, but if someone like Ford offers it, then it's delicate. Maybe every Caprice could have a bumper sticker that reads "no replacement for displacement" or "Thanks to the bailout, we still utilize RWD V8 like your granpappy."

Maybe a little harsh but instead of giving them cars, we should be training them in keeping fit so they can actually chase down offenders when they run.

GM conveniently neglected to leave out the new PI in its results...
