2011 Hyundai Equus Review: Just Another Pacific Rim Knockoff Of The Germans?

2011 Hyundai Equus Review: Just Another Pacific Rim Knockoff Of The Germans?
The Equus, a premium sedan whose price tag could run about $60,000, poses a challenge to the popular conception of Hyundai as a poor man's Honda. It's an extremely well-rendered knockoff of its competition.

There's something wrong about a pair of 7-year-olds lounging like sultans in the back of a $60,000 luxury vehicle, downing Go-Gurt from an armrest mini fridge, watching Godzilla  on a private screen enhanced with 17-speaker surround sound, and bicker-battling over a remote control that commands a rear-seat massage feature.

I don't think the Genesis is selling too well in the luxury market... Hyundai is releasing both the coupe and sedan numbers as one bunch. Since the coupe is in no way a luxury car then they really only sell about a thousand genesis sedans a month...

Patrick,

The Camry outsells the MB S-class, does that make the S-class not a luxury car?

I'm not knocking Hyundai for building a car like this. But I am curious how this all plays out. They're only bringing 2000 of them here for all of next year so they won't have a problem moving them all.

Good for Hyundai. They have come a long way.

They are possibly becoming the strongest brand in Asia and even a good rival to Lexus and VW BUT IMO never a rival to the upper German brands. I am lucky enough to have 2 Benzs (07 CLS63 & 10 S550) and nothing drives like a Benz IMO, that what comes from the worlds oldest car company (1886)

But Mercedes Benz wasn't a car company in 1886, it wasn't until 1926 that Daimler and Banz merged. Oldest brand however, I would agree with.

Haven't we learned how fast the Koreans adapt with each generation. Who would have thought that the Sonata would have been improved so much in its latest iteration. So the styling and features of this Equus are not class-leading, I wouldn't bet against the next version, or the generation after that.

How come Acura still won't offer a V8. Can't it outsource the V8 engine, stretch the current RL, give it a more impressive look and styling and come in under $60,000?

It doesn't really matter if Hyundai makes money building the Equus or the Genesis (to a lesser extent). The Equuus is really a design/engineering study for them, pretty much the same way that the Veyron is a study for the entire VAG group. VW loses a million Euros on each on built, but it's a small price to pay for what they have learnt and what will eventually filter down to the Jetta (Elantra) and the rest.
