UAW Threatens To Boycott Chase Bank Unless It Freezes Foreclosures For Two Years
United Auto Workers President Bob King and religious leaders say they plan to withdraw hundreds of millions of dollars from JP Morgan Chase accounts to protest the bank's refusal to agree to a two-year freeze on foreclosures in Michigan.

King, farm union leader Baldemar Velazquez and two clerics will hold a conference today at the Central United Methodist Church in Detroit to announce their campaign against the New York-based bank.

"Chase needs to help unemployed homeowners in Michigan," King said in a statement.
Organizers also are protesting the bank's ties to the tobacco company RJ Reynolds Corp., which they say has refused to negotiate with the Farm Labor Organizing Committee over wages and working conditions at farms of contract growers in North Carolina.

thats really not the same thing and pretty ignorrant but hey this autospies where this political nonsense shouldnt be in the firstplace its like 009 its tracking whatever the UAW and Obama do. Honestly if this wasnt about the UAW the comments wouldnt be as rediculous I dont care much for their decisions either, but realistically the situation over in Detroit is alot different than many of the places alot of us are from, you talk cheap enough yet many banks were given bailout money to survive yet in areas like Michigan where the situation is worse they refuse to even understand or work with people....right...??? Thats worth your tax payer money right....pocket the governments money while still not supporting the community that theyve already gotten paid for

So where do you draw the line?

They are seeking relief because of the depressed job market? Then it needs to take in Vegas, Cali, and Florida too.

Sorry when telecom went bust down here and Nortel and others dumped tens of thousands on the market, we got nothing. You diversified, some Detroit never did.

Again UAW wants special treatment for the lifestyle that took them to the brink.

you should draw the line at first off constantly generalizing people thats one, secondly if your going to apply the same ignorrant concepts using a blanket approach no matter how much it doesnt fit do it with this bank as well. Deboost all you want wrong is wrong, and just because I, you or the teenager posting in medial opinions here arent in the same situation a growing population of people doesn't mean its not a problem. Fact, it is. You constantly bash and generalize in one an Auto blog regarding political issues in an AUTO blog that you like your car reviews are completely bias and blind to anything outside of your one track borderline obsession and hatred of the same groups of people and person.........just plain ignorrant

Whatever bank the UAW chooses to go to better understand their potential future predicament.

It seems to me that the unions want benefits for their laborers, without sharing in the risk, without experiencing nasty consequences from their own decisions and actions, and without feeling the impact of a sickly economy.

Exactly! Unions are no different than any other entity with political influence and money. They look after their own interests to ensure: survival, growth and more power.

Wait, so Chase is supposed to look the other way when people don't pay their mortgage? In that case, their profits along with stock prices decrease, the market overreacts and we'll have to bail them out again! Plus, I'll get a CTS-V and ask the UAW to build it for free or push for a relief on my loan because times are tough.

and yet the irony of that statement is tax money was basically unloaded at these banks doorsteps to use on frivolous gatherings and to still not offer credit, nor give forclosure relief which was the point (still dont agree with it) of doing so in the firstplace...

You simply cannot generalize or categorize "these banks" for every bank. The banks were not offered the TARP funds and subsequent government funds. They were given it, in order to keep their balance sheet and reserves at a manageable level, yet certain banks, JPMC, happens to be one that practices conservative business practices and did not need the funds.

So yes, what you are talking about is right, certain banks are taking the funds to spend frivolously, but certain banks are not. Please do not generalize...

I'm sorry but that's ridiculous to the point that it angers me. First, it's patently unfair to expect one bank to have to freeze foreclosures while all the other banks continue. Second, it's unfair for one union to get preferential treatment. Granting this would be quite a slippery slope. What's next? The teachers union? The Masons? How many large groups get to band together and decide they should be exempt from paying their bills? And hey, while we're at it, why stop at foreclosures? How about the unions join up and decide they should never have to pay back the giant credit card bills they racked up when money was rolling in and they were living large? Oh wait, we already have that (I want to vomit every time I hear that "your credit card bills are not your fault, now you can do something about it!" radio commercials).

Times are tough everywhere. It sucks. Now deal with it, like millions of other people.

So the UAW are expecting an independant company to adhere to their demands? why?

JPMC manages the over 2 Trillion dollars in assets. several hundred million from the UAW will not hurt the company...

Maybe Chase should create posters that say "We are not the UAW" - it'll probably make a bigger statement.

So nobody actually took the time to read the article? As usual. The removal of the the UAW money is to help EVERYONE in Michigan not just the UAW the article is very misleading and biased.

So what about California? Nevada? We are still talking about asking a private business to absorb losses arbitrarily. Just remember we pride ourselves with offering "freedom", so anyone buying a home did so at their own choosing. It is terrible that people are facing foreclosure, but who is the UAW infringe on the rights of Chase shareholders?

Considering what a horrible bank Chase is- how they hike up people's interest rates with no warnings (yes, even the people who pay consistently on time and have good credit), charge hidden fees outta the wazoo (didn't use your card at least five times? Feed. Don't get direct deposit? Feed. Looked too many times at your accounts online? Feed), how they hold people's checks for over 24 hrs on weekdays and charge them fees for money "not there," and refuse to work with their customers at all--- this is Karma. May every organization everywhere boycott Chase until it is six feet under. Maybe the shareholders can pull out and start backing a bank that is actually ethical.

kortneykortney - 10/7/2010 5:04:11 PM

Oh, yes, they also tend to "lose" payments and charge you late fees on the payment (that you can prove was sent through the paper trail) and still can't get it together even after you've paid it. You're STILL being told you didn't pay it. This happens repeatedly.

I hope Michigan helps bring this bank down. It's now buying out smaller banks and screwing those people over, too.
