PARIS MOTOR SHOW: BMW Takes iPhone Integration To The Next Level
OK,  so your techno oriented friends are telling you about the impending doom of the iPhone and that Android will be the king of the hill.

Don't tell that to BMW  because they have raised the bar to a new start when it comes to iPhone integration.  Take a look at the shots of the integration on the X3 from phone, music and GPS, seamlessly integrated entirely replacing the NAV screen built into the vehicle.

So when those techno guys tell you, with it's open source nature, number of carriers and a variety of form factors that Android will be the dominant platform in the phone market. You can fire right back that very "advantages" will keep those devices out full scale automotive integration.  There are simply too many variables and form factors for any automaker to do anything other a basic Android integration.

This is probably part of an interface package that replaces the NAV screen.

that seems like a very cheap feature, i'd prefer a nav screen that integrates wirelessly with other electronic devices

The obvious reason is most BMW owners probably have an iPhone already, so it makes it simple to implement. Just place the charging cradle on the dash and give them an interface and you save the cost and real estate of a touch screen.

Neat looking, but the iPhone is just not a great navigation unit.

This is like F1 getting multiple advertisements and being made up of two racing companies. This should save BMW some money on development cost.

The great thing about this is that it would never be outdated, your car would ALWAYS be up to date because you would be able to use the latest phone.
