Toyota Stuck In Second Gear As The Rest Of The Pack Shifts Into High For September

The big three of Japan have just announced US sales figures for the month of September. After a impossible follow up last month against the 2009 Cash For Clunkers program September was going to be the acid test to see just is in the best shape.
Nissan was first out of the gate up 35.1% for the month, with luxury brand Infiniti posting a respectable 25.6% gain for the month.

Honda was next to report that Honda brand sales rebounded 23.8% and Luxury Acura sales skyrocketed 47.7% for the period.

Toyota brand vehicles trailed the pack posting a still respectable 20.5% gain in core branded vehicle, however Lexus posted a rather disappointing 5.5% DECREASE in sales for the month.

Lexus is particularly concerning considering it typically rode on the coat tails of reliability and resale of the Toyota nameplate as strong selling points. Are tough times are ahead for Lexus in 2010?
