Win, Place, Or Show? Mercedes And BMW Poised To Overtake Lexus In 2011
The race to be the year’s top-selling luxury automobile brand in the U.S. narrowed as Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’s namesake line both gained ground on Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus.
“Lexus has been by far the luxury leader in this market and now Mercedes and BMW have closed that gap pretty rapidly,” Joe Barker, an industry analyst with IHS Automotive, a Lexington, Massachusetts-based researcher, said before the release. “The sales race will come down to the wire -- it will come down right to the month of December.”

nine months of domination are more than enough for Lexus. I think is time to see other players in the game!

I wish BMW/Audi/Mercedes/etc. would stop focusing on selling "the most" cars and focus on selling "the best" cars. Go back to being the aspirational purchases they used to be, instead of all trying to be the "GM of luxury cars" they all seem to be intent on becoming.

You have the right idea. Sales is nothing more than how wide you cast the net.
The lower the entry point the bigger your net is. Hence more fishes in the pond.

not sure since when Mercedes and BMW havent been aspirational vehicles, not to mention these 2 brands along with Lincoln and Cadillac used to be top selling luxury car brands were they not aspirational vehicles than??? Not to mention these cars are built for profit and revenue why would they not want to sell as many as they can, that doesn't make sense.

The irony of these somewhat diluted opinions is I have heard 009 not once knock Audi for continuing to make coach build vws as a way to increase sales, you talk about casting bigger net the A1, A3, Q3 are these not simple redos of an economy car? Is the Cayenne not a slightly restlyed Toureg, same goes for the Q7. If anyone should be on here discussed about how they simply are doing any and everything to produce more sales its certainly the vw group as they are the German version of Old GM platform and badge engineering at its finest.....

The last three months will come down to who wants to buy the business. I don't think Lexus will sit by and lose their 11 yr reign.
