New VW Mid Sized Sedan May Be Built In China As Well

Volkswagen AG may expand production of a mid-sized sedan designed for U.S. customers to China in a bid to win buyers in the world’s biggest auto market.

The model, which will be priced at about $20,000, will be built to begin with at VW’s new plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and sold in the U.S. in the second half of 2011.

“We will see demand for this car growing in other countries such as China,” said Ulrich Hackenberg, head of Volkswagen’s brand development, in an interview. “Our production pattern allows us to transfer vehicles from one plant to another at relatively low effort.”

VW's quality and reliability is already questionable. Now they're going to build them in China? Good luck

VW's have been built in China for more than 25 years, as well as in Brazil, Mexico, etc... shocking news.

So that's where the quality issue comes from.... :)

I never understood VW, a non-premium German car that is chasing the Japanese. They just seem eclectic - with the hippie crowd. The new designs seem boring.

Most of the automobile parts are made in China. Many brand names are from China. MB and Audi already have plants in China long ago. The quality issue are usually coming from the management, not the location where the products are produced. Our manufacturing plants in US are not better than those in China. We have poor management, poor design of equipment and poor working culture that led the crisis few years ago. This is not a shocking news at all. The most shocking part is that no one seems to know what the outside world is. China has been producing almost everything to the world for a long time. Even the high-end auto parts are also made in China. Many many auto manufactures have their assembly plants in Taiwan and China. They do not have the major quality issues at all. While they are improving, we are still at the same spot or going backward.

That will not improve VW's reality/image of poor quality and unreliable cars.
