Next Gen GT-R To Have Over 500HP And We Hope A New Drivetrain To Match

The mid-life refresh of the Nissan GT-R will feature a power hike as well as tweaked styling and new interior trim options.

Nissan is keeping details of the extra power to itself – although rumours suggest it might rise to over 500bhp.

The design tweaks are intended to flow more cooling air into the engine bay, which suggests the power might rise substantially. Also improved is the aerodynamics with a new front airdam, rear bumper and improved diffuser.

What's wrong with the current drivetrain?

Absolutely nothing.

Drivetrain comment is in reference to the history of tranny/diff failures. One might reasonably expect Nissan to eliminate the problem during a mid-cycle refresh especially with the bump-up in horsepower.

But,.... maybe not.

Correct, The GT-R is well known for transmission failures.

Personally I think it is an awesome car, but in reality it is also a horribly reliable one as well. Too highly tuned for the drivetrain it is equipped with. Pretty sad when the engine can crank out gobs of power but you have to pussyfoot the car to keep the tranny from becoming a grenade.

Agent 009 you are a complete idiot. The transmission never failed, it was the first gear that would shred to bits from idiots launching the GTR to show off when the trans fluid was very hot. There has already been an update that not only prolongs the life of the first gear, but also made the GTR even faster.

Hasn't it been well established that the transmission issues were due to driver abuse and improper use? That whole thing was pretty much over with the revisions on the launch control mechanism over a year ago.

veyron, you are an idiot.
1. First gear is part of the transmission
2. If it shredded with less than 500hp, how are they going to make it last with more than 500hp? More ecu programming that limits how quickly torque can be applied on launch?

Any Transmission will fail if abused.

Would 009 say the same of the Ferrari 458 which magically bursts into flames when driven? I think not.

It's amazing how many updates GT-R has already received in 2 years. Nissan is continually working on their Supercar.
Can't wait to see the numbers and comparison tests of refreshed GT-R.

Great - - - another car with headlights that go half way up the hood.

This car is supposedly built for track use (the Japanese versions automatically detect if you were at a racetrack and automatically disable the 118mph speed limiter so you can let loose and do your best...or is it worst?). Yet on the street it doesn't hold up to so-called "abuse"? Rubbish. If the transmission fluid gets "hot" when launching from a standing start how would it fair at Laguna Seca? Or at The 'Ring? This car is what we in the English-speaking world call FRAGILE. Give me a Corvette Z06 that I can drive to work every day, then take to the track on a Sunday and kick tail left right and centre.

A GTR (when working) is faster around a track than the Z06 :)
