Just How Well Does A 2011 Hyundai Equus Compare To The 2011 Bentley Mulsanne?
Just about everyone knows what a Hyundai is now days and many enthusiasts have given them proper respect for building a quality vehicle in segments once mainly dominated by Japanese automakers. Recently Motor Trend thought that the new 2011 Hyundai Equus, their new flagship luxury vehicle, is worthy for comparison to the new 2011 Bentley Mulsanne.

Hate to say it but bland-and-copied-from-many-rivals front end of Equus looks better than the front end of Mulsanne. The abnormal looking headlamps got to go.

@Jugnu: "Mulsanne was created using its predecessor, company founder W.O. Bentley’s 1930 Bentley 8-liter model, as the inspiration..."
Those headlamps grow on you when you look back and see where they came from:

Honestly bently always had the circle Headlights they just made them bigger for the Mulsanne and added LED's inside....so its not such a huge acheivement but they work as far as todays standards go

LOL. When I first saw the headline, I thought "You're kidding, right?", but on second thought I asked myself "Why not?". If Hyundai wants to be taken seriously in the luxury sector, why not compare the Equus to the best super-luxury sedan in the world?
If you know anything about cars, you already know the outcome of this comparison. The Equus is a very nice car and sells for 1/5 the price of the Mulsanne, but the Bentley trumps the Hyundai soundly in terms of roominess, luxury, refinement, performance, prestige - everything but fuel economy and political correctness. So if you are concerned about saving the planet, saving your lungs, and saving your money, buy the Equus. Otherwise, buy the Mulsanne and live the good life!
I enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek humor of the two Motor Trend testers.
By the way, the Mulsanne's front end takes some getting used to, but it grows on you quickly. But the Equus - we'll be in the next century before it ever grows on me!

I'm sure with the abundance of leather the Equus has for its class, the quality is nowhere on par with Bentley's.

So basically it's pretty close except for all the "veblen goods" subjective "but i feel good cuz i paid so much" details.
If you're rolling in the cash and need to show it, the Bentley, but if you want 90% of car for way less, the Hyundai. Got it.

You can get 90% of the Equus in a Toyota Camry.
Anyways - the Bentley comes with Grey Poupon.

I highly doubt anybody is even considering that people will cross-shop these two cars. The point to this test is to see exactly how the Equus compares to the best. There is no winner or loser here. There are some things that Bentley will do well because they have always done well (leather and wood, for example) and things that Hyundai will do well because they have always done well (lots of car for the money, for example). This is the type of test I like to see. I want to see how cars I can afford compare with those I cannot. That way I know exactly how much I'm missing, if anythnig at all.

Come on guys/gals, this is like Top Gear doing strange/unimaginable comparison for the fun of it. And why are so many of you defending the Bentley as if you own one and are personally affronted by this comparison anyway? Personally, I kinda like BMW and Lexus fans getting all riled up by Hyundai's audacity in recent months (not that I would buy a Hyundai over a BMW or Lexus).

Is this one of those lame April Joke of the day at autospies? It October 2010 NOT April 2010,
I don't care what anyone said, we all said alot of thing to support our favorite brands, but come on, comapring a Roll Royce to a Hyundai is just plain disrespectul.
If Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, BMW, Audi and MB cannot compare to the Roll Royce, how can Hyundai compare to it?
I know MB is the first automobile made for mass market and sold to civilian but this comparison is just plain stupid.
No is going to cross shop between a Roll Royce and Hyundai.
