BMW's new ad campaign brilliant? Should GM be listening?

Today, I'm happy to comment on a new ad that has been appearing in newspapers and magazines across the country. The ad is simply headlined with the word, "No." - and it's a new image statement from BMW that captures the very essence of the BMW soul - probably even rekindling the company's own internal spirit in the process, reminding them why they actually do the things they do. The copy is simply brilliant - each word resonating with meaning while perfectly setting the cadence for the reader.

175 words that serve as an epic reminder to every other car company in the world of why they will never be like BMW.

Can't wait to hear 001 buster's comments about this article! ;)

First off, I do say this advertisement was really written beautifully.

The one problem I have is that, maybe you BMW fans can help me, they say no to “compromise” quite a bit. “No, we will not compromise our ideas. No, we will not do it the way everyone else does it.” I’m sure when they say this they are referencing their vehicles, but by being so vague you could attack the company as a whole. The fact that hybrid’s are huge right now aren’t they “compromising” and “doing it the way everyone else does it” by entering the hybrid market? Were they planning on entering the hybrid market, previous to the great demand of hybrids? And the fact that they are teaming up GM and DaimlerChrysler towards their hybrids, isn’t "compromise" inevitable towards working with a team. I know the collaboration between the companies only go so far and the rest of the planning is divided to each company, however it seems somewhat contradictory that they say no to “compromise.”

This newspaper ad reminds me of the new TV ad about this little car that looks cute but the advertiser desperately tries to convey otherwise by showing a black model with tinted windows and unwilling to convert under the spell of a fairy.

If this car is not cute than why advertise that it is not??? ... (it is cute).

This is bad advertising to me. Similarly with BMW. Here is a company that supposedly makes the best handling automobiles. If that is true than why attack the competition, BMWs should sell by themselves.

While sales may be increasing, it does not mean market share is increasing. BMW may or may not still be the leader, but it now faces very serious competition from more and more players (Lexus, Infiniti, Audi, MB, Cadillac) and it feels threatened. It is also important to note that this commentary is only valid for the US, since BMW runs third, after Audi and MB in the all knowledgeable world of automotiles, Deutschland (as in most other European countries). Makes you think why it is different in the US... in my opinion, in the US its all about image and not about the car. This would explain why most Europeans (most Germans), the creators of the modern sports car, prefer Audis and MBs to BMWs.

Unfortunately (for BMW), people that buy these cars here in the US typically are very savvy buyers and they know what effects parent companies can have and they know where the automotive world is heading. Parent companies can have negative effects as well as positive effects on a "subsidiary". Corporate relationships are much more complex than what BMW claims in their add which is designed to impress those uninformed.

I'm not impressed.

Sounds like a pretty dull world to live in. 001's description of BMW's state of health is so far out of touch with reality I don't know where to begin first.

In his mirror universe, it's BMW that's struggling, laying people off and in deep financial poo-poo, and GM and Ford that are beating sales targets every quarter.

Sounds like a very creepy world to live in. Thankfully it has nothing in common with the reality the rest of us live in.
