"Mad Dog" LaHood Sets The Stage To Ban ALL Types Of Vehicular Phone Usage

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he believes motorists are distracted by any use of mobile phones while driving, including hands-free calls, as his department begins research that may lead him to push for a ban.

LaHood, whose campaign against texting and making calls while driving has led to restrictions in 30 states, says his concerns extend to vehicle information and entertainment systems such as Ford Motor Co.’s Sync and General Motors Co.’s OnStar.

“I don’t want people talking on phones, having them up to their ear or texting while they’re driving,” LaHood said in an interview this week. “We need a lot better research on other distractions,” including Bluetooth-enabled hands-free calls and the in-car systems, he said.

Unfortunately in this case the idiot actually has a point.

According to the last two studies on text bans, it did not help the accident rates. Even the IIHS now agrees this isn't the way to go.

Yet this dope continues to act like a socialist dictator.

Yes there is a problem but you need to think before you talk.

What next? Require all vehicle to become a large Faraday cage, so no signals come in at all? Or will they start pulling all phone records of all accidents to make sure.

He is beginning to sound more like those in the UK everyday.

- Are you saying that texting while driving is safe? You admit that there's a problem but offer no ideas on how to remedy it. Typical Republican. LOL!! Maybe Tax cuts for the wealthy and fewer regulations for Corporations will fix it?

+1 LexSucks....nothing worse than a preacher teaching hell and damnation without hope and salvation.

I propose they either fine the public into their graves for talking on their cellphones while driving, or suspend licenses for a week and slap them with reckless driving on the second offense.

Seriously people, is this idiot serious?? This is nothing but telling the nation that we will rip you off in every possible way!! This is telling the cops don't do your duty of stopping crimes, but ticket drivers instead!

Such things that are coming from DC just make me sick!!! We voted for these garbage??? It makes me SICK!!

What makes me sick is that you are ignoring the fact that texting and talking on a cell phone while driving causes people to drive erratically and is dangerous. I can’t tell you the times I’ve been cut off by someone with a cell phone to their ear. Or someone driving 10 mph below the speed limit, while chatting away on a cell phone oblivious to what’s going on around them. All you have to say about all this is to get mad at Washington for wanting to do something about it? Wow!

How many of you idiots can honestly say that you can concentrate the same amount when driving while on the phone and not on the phone. Your reaction is not the same when you are talking on the phone period. You don't need a rocket scientist to tell you that.

They can’t. They are just mad because someone from the Obama administration is attempting to legislate. It goes against the narrative here. So they knock it, even though the intent is a good one. Pathetic.

Your're an idiot for not contributing something pertinent to the conversation. And when your only single contribution to the conversation is to personally attack someone(by calling them an idiot). It makes you seem weak and unreasonable. At least offer a view point about what we're talking about, instead of attacking someone who's talking about it. LOL! Get off the sidelines and play ball. Or are you scared? Either way, stop heckling.

"Talking" on a cellphone is no different from "talking" to a passenger in the car. In fact, a passenger in the car is far more likely to distract you by throwing some juice on the brand new leather seats, throwing a toy out the window, or just plain throwing up! Another type of passenger may be feeling a bit randy and decide to...ehem...I digress. But you get the point. The problem here is not the cellphone it's the driver. Plain and simple. Too many people are behind the wheel who are not properly trained to operate the car it's attached to. Being able to parallel park is no longer a test of one's ability to handle a motor vehicle. Heck, every car manufacturer has some kind of parking assist these days.

Are you even a driver? Think before you write anything. You have to concentrate more when you are the phone than if the person is next to you. You know the person's feeling when they are next to you rather than guess what the person is doing, thinking or react to something you say on the phone. Every second count when you are driving either in city slow traffic or high speed.

You couldn't be more wrong there are evidence that talking on a cellphone while driving is a dangerous as driving drunk, additional those that think they are the best at are actually the worst. Check out the links.

What about getting lost or an emergency? A lot of people drive old cars out there, or older folks from other country that live here and don't know how to use the GPS? Restricting it is one thing but banning is plain stupid and wrong.

Simply raise the speed limit. Do they have this problem in Europe?

What do you expect from people when actually driving a modern car at our 1/2 century old speed limits requires about 10% of the average person's attention...
