They STILL Don't Get It: Toyota To Water Down FT-86 And Offer As A Scion Only Model

They STILL Don't Get It: Toyota To Water Down FT-86 And Offer As A Scion Only Model
Ive been sitting on this information in disbelief, however we have other confirmations in hand now.

According to our inside source at Toyota the FT-86 is going to be released as a Scion in the USA. Toyota and Scion Marketing and Management adjourned across the US this past Tuesday to receive the news. Their reasons behind using Scion is reported as Marketability and pricing structure, Scions as you might know share a fixed pricing structure at all dealerships. If released as a Toyota the FT86 could be suspect to price hikes. In the end it sounded like Subaru and Toyota thought that Scion was the best choice for the FT-86, I strongly disagree.

The report also included that of a 2.5l Engine would make it to production. The current engine "marketed" with the Toyota FT-86 is only a 2.0 liter. The choice of the 2.5l is a good one. However they are also increasing the original entry level price range around $25,000 US.

Scion is overpriced and too much teenager type. It does not give the impression of a mature sports car. Maybe they should market it as a new Celica.

In actuality this story originated from the WSJ-

"The Wall Street Journal reports that Toyota management told dealers in Las Vegas there will be a production version of the FT-86 badged as a Scion model." Take it with a grain of salt, and this does NOT mean there won't be a toyota variant of the model, which may be the FT-86 people are expecting.

Didn't I say months ago that this was going to happen?

Was Scion ever cool? From day one this brand seemed lost and confused. I work with a lot of young people and none of them have ever expressed interest in Scion as a brand or their cars.

This this car supposed to be a Celica or Supra replacement?

The Celica has always been a poseur sports car for teens and college students getting their first "cool" car, but not wanting to drive a civic. The Celica has never been a true sports car, though it looked sporty.

Is the criticism here that the FT86 is not sporty enough? Doesn't matter if it's a Scion or Toyota as long as it's a car people want.
For example, if it has 300HP and selling for $26K, people will buy it regardless of Scion or Toyota branding.

A 300 hp Scion, I serious doubt it, because most of Toyota are below 300 hp except their SUV. With 300 hp it is almost on par with the current IS350 with 306 hp. And even if (that a Big if) happen, how much are they going to sell it?

If it's true...i'm sure many will opt for the Subaru version.

The subaru version will not be sold in NA. Although I guess reading the article is asking too much....this is after all, Autospies.

If correct, this car will be a tough sell at $25,000 with competition like the V-6 Camaro & Mustang or Gensis Coupe.

This what happens. Toyota does a crap load of research and they determine this car would sell better as a Scion.

Rumor, just to confuse the competitor, especially Huyndai and VW.

I sincerely hope that's sarcasm!

Since when did VW give a flying f*ck about what toyota does? The GTI is already one of the pricest and least powered car in its segment. Hyundai already has a coupe on the market that is selling! This does not even include the 274+ horse 2.0 motor they are about to release in the Sonata.

The only people that are confused are loyal Toyota fans that keep wandering why their emotions are being "Toy'ed" with(pun intended) and their dedication abused!

I'm not saying the product they have now, but the ones for the future. Got to think ahead.

If this is true than, it going to cost Toyota for sure. First of all why are they trying to save brand they created NOT to long ago?

Secondly, why use this Toyota FT-86 as the Toyota Replacement? Toyota is a really well establish brand. What would you rather save Toyota or Scion? It a No brainer question.

If they choose this route, I am seeing VW passing them within 5 years and Hyundai in 5-10 years. Even the new Hyundai Sonata look better and more sleek than the Camry.

Correction, why not use this Toyota FT-86 as the Toyota Celica replacement?

It doesn't matter how they brand it, it'll either sell or it won't.
