GM Urges Feds To Lift Cap On Electric Vehicle Tax Credits
The federal government should lift the cap on tax credits for electric vehicles, a top General Motors Co. executive says.

GM Vice Chairman Tom Stephens praised the government for all of the efforts toward making electric vehicles a reality. But he said he'd like to see Congress lift the cap on the $7,500 tax credit.

Currently, credit is capped at 200,000 vehicles per manufacturer. He warned that automakers could hit that cap during the first-generation of electric vehicles.

GM is set to sell about 10,000 extended range electric Chevrolet Volt models over the next year — and 30,000 in 2012.

Can you explain how it's not an electric vehicle? I was fooled by some misleading articles that I read earlier.

Please read the article they want the cap of 200,000 cars lifted for all automakers. So whoever works hard and sells more than 200,00 cars can EARN more money. It's not a hand out and it is not welfare.

It has a tank.

Prius: Large gasoline engine + large gasoline tank + small electric motor + small battery = Hybrid vehicle

Volt: Small gasoline engine + small gasoline tank + large electric motor + small battery = Hybrid vehicle

Leaf: Large electric motor + large battery + no gasoline tank = Electric vehicle

So if I put a weed whipper into the trunk of a Leaf, then it would be a hybrid? The generator aboard the leaf during the first 25-50 miles does not engage. So technically a leaf with a weed whipper is as hybrid as the volt is. The thing that people have been tripped up on was that transmission. There is a second smaller electric motor that uses that transmission at higher speeds. The generator still won't engage at higher speeds.
