Cayenne Named MT SUV Of The Year: Did Porsche Beat The Americans At Their Own Game?
We realize this looks bad. A bunch of unabashed car-loving adrenaline junkies invite a high-clearance sports car to an SUV contest and go all wobbly-kneed with excitement, crowning it champ.
We can hear the hate mail composing itself from here: "That high-falutin' Porsh is an even stupider pick than last year's Scooby-doo station wagon! Cancel my subscription! (Again!)" We beg your indulgence as we build our case around the six key criteria.

Mmmm, no, you can make a superior product, but you'll never win the game unless it also has a superior, or at least competitive price. That being said, if money was of no concern the Cayenne is probably the first suv I would buy.

Last year Motor Trend named the 2010 Subaru Outback their Sport/Utility of The Year. Following the same train of though, the Japanese have also beat America at it's own game - - - and at a much more affordable price than the Porsche.

I was in a white Chrysler Aspen Limited with a hemi last night loaded with the 20" Chrome wheels and cream leather interior. A Cayenne passed us then moved over, and it was passed by a white Escalade with accompanying chrome accents and wheels (stock). I prefer the look of the big bruisers with chrome to a sports SUV that pretty much defeats the purpose of owning an SUV. Build a wagon instead.

I was almost with u with the chrome thing but you lost me with the rest of it. Im WISHING for the day Cadillac builds an Escalade that is #1, smaller (there is no need for the third row unless its the extended ESV) and #2 handles as well as it looks. (see Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, X5/X6)

The SUV market is not "one thing" and more than the sedan market is "one thing." The Cayenne populates a *segment* of that market. A segment in which the Americans are not even playing.

The Cayenne was built for Westport and Greenwich soccer moms.

I forgot to add: Who cannot get out of their own way in their Turbo S. Typically slower and worse drivers than elderly

I would've chosen the Grand Cherokee, which was a night and day improvement over the last model, not to mention much more accessible.

Well the new Cayenne is a definate improvement over version #1. It is 400 lbs lighter, handles way better. In fact "Autocar" did a track test between a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and the Cayenne Turbo on a race track. The Cayenne was only 1.4 seconds slower in it's lap time!! Now that is truely astounding! An SUV with a higher center of gravity weighing in at almost ton more then the 911 almost matched the "sports cars" lap time. In fact I find myself liking the Cayenne better then the Panamera in the looks department. It's like having your cake and eating it too.The Grand Cherokee is a tremendous improvement over it's previous version. However the Cayenne truely does defy the law of gravity. Therefore I think it deserves the "Best SUV" award.

This car has surprising off road performance with performance street tires. Kudos for that! This car is far from perfect, but it's great nevertheless.

But once again everyone hails it for it's performance, however most people driving this car will never exploit even a fraction of the cars potential. Of The Year Awards should be based on other factors as well. I know I'm shooting for a -10 vote on this article. I'm just very biased about this car, same as I am biased about the X5, X6, Panamera.

If the Corvette had been spun off into an SUV, there might be some comparison. The entire American SUV game was based on turning inexpensive truck platforms into testosterone-bloated bulgemobiles. The American game has always been about a high markup; the Cayenne was designed from the ground up.
