DRIVEN: Is The Porsche 911 997 Turbo Still The King Of 911s?
Although there has been a lot of hysteria about how many models of 911s Porsche has been turning out, there is still one that is largely considered king: the 911 Turbo. Granted, with cars like the GT3, GT2 and GT2 RS, you have to wonder, is this still the road-going king?

No doubt the GT2 RS is what you'll want on the Nuburgring but that doesn't mean that is what you'll want as you drive from the 'burbs to your job.

Let's take a peek at the editors from AutoWeek have to say about this matter...

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: This is my favorite 911. I thought for a split second that maybe the GT3 would be able to bump the Turbo, but it couldn't in the end....

EXECUTIVE EDITOR--AUTOWEEK.COM BOB GRITZINGER: I also was fortunate to drive the 911 GT3 before the mighty Turbo. As I noted in my GT3 comments, I felt that car was a touch too much for someone who might want to drive their Porsche everyday--or at least more often than just out to the racetrack for few laps and home again. It's hard to argue with the manual tranny in the GT3, but after spending a rush-hour commute with the clutch-pedal-less PDK trans in this Turbo, I have no complaints. That GT3 clutch is a monster--not sure I've legged out something like that since the old 1968 Pontiac Firebird....

ROAD TEST EDITOR NATALIE NEFF: OK, I'm going to start with my gripes, with this caveat: These are admittedly girly gripes and almost not worth noting, but I'm going to note them anyway.

First, I could not figure out how to turn the POI icons off the nav map, and once I noticed them, I fixated on trying to switch them off to the exclusion of almost everything else. (It's not even like I need to have the map on to begin with, but for whatever reason, if the car has nav, I keep the map on.) It's just the MMI or iDrive or whatever Porsche calls its brand of user interface is not nearly as intuitive as it could be...

Isn't there a 911 GT2 RS? I think THAT is the true King of the Hill. The numbers stomp that of the Turbo.

For everyday road driving the Turbo S has to rank better. The GT3 and GT2RS are hardcore and do better on the race track but the Turbo S does better on the road. Porsche has made the Turbo RS the best compromise between road comfort performance and handling. However I would still prefer the the upcoming 911 GTS because I like to to hear the sound of a flat 6. That's probably the one area where the GT3 shines the most.To me a car is a total waste if you cannot use it on the road and be reasonably comfortable.
