Dodge To Scrap Caliber And Replace With Alfa Romeo Gulietta
Chrysler Group's Dodge brand is going to get a version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta small hatchback late next year as a replacement for the Dodge Caliber.Chrysler/Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne identified the Giulietta as the donor model in comments Thursday discussing Fiat's surprisingly robust third-quarter earnings.

The Chrysler five-year product plan unveiled Nov. 4 identifies the Caliber as dead meat after 2011, to be replaced by a Fiat-based model of similar size built by Chrysler.

Poor reliability over the course of time? I don't care. It's pretty. I want Dodge to use the exact same body although it doesn't match the brand although I do see some aggression.

I think that Chrysler may be turning a corner here.I'm not sure about the new Chrysler 200. From the pictures and what Chrysler is willing to show us the 200 appears to be just a Sebring(same green house) with nicer front and rear ends. From the cladded 300 the basic shape appears the same. Again sightly revised front and rear design form the 200 show car. To me this might make the 300 a little bland. The current model is distinctive with its prominant grill.Making the new Dodge compact a Giulietta sounds great. It will be interesting to see what the styling is. Shoud be reasonably fun to drive.

Personally, I'm not too fond of most cars in the hatchback/sport compact segment. However, the Giulietta looks to be very impressive based on the various images and standard equipment specifications.

Chrysler/Fiat should scrap any plans for a Giulietta based Dodge (at least for now) and just bring the Alfa Romeo Giulietta to the U.S. The Giulietta is definitely a looker and if priced competitively, could attract new consumers into Dodge/Alfa Romeo showrooms while bringing the focus back on the legendary Alfa Romeo brand once again.

Supposidly Fiat is bringing a 5 dr Mito to the US in 2013. This will be a restyled car. So this might mean that Fiat is going after the A car(sub Golf market) to compete with the Mini more directly. That is unless they make it the 5dr larger. I suspect that the Mito(version 2) might be on a C Evo platform like Giulietta is now.In an A segment car you can get away with strictly a hatchback. When you go to a B segment car(Golf,Jetta,Focus,Cruze), you need to offer a sedan. So it will be interesting to see if the Dodge version remains a hatchback or goes to a sedan format. A lot can change between now and when it comes on the market for Dodge. It's also a matter of if Dodge feels that it has a better chance of sales in Hatchback format or sedan. It will be interesting to see what happens.
