Once again Sergio Marchionne says that Alfa Romeo isn’t for sale
Fiat SpA has rejected an offer from Volkswagen AG to buy Alfa Romeo. CEO Sergio Marchionne said that Alfa Romeo isn’t for sale. What this means is that the Italian company’s shareholders will have at least two more years of depressed profit. Max Warburton, a Sanford C. Bernstein analyst in London, estimates that Fiat’s annual loss for the brand is about 300 million euros ($416 million). He predicts that Fiat will post earnings before interest and taxes this year of 1.77 billion euros,

Well-Certainly he wants to at least let Alfa show some either production success or significantly increase it's value before he would ever decide to sell.Remember Marchionne is a money man. Selling Alfa for nothing to VW doesn't really benefit Fiat too much.Yes it would stem loses off Fiat's bottom line. However Fiat has essentially cut off Alfa's balls when it took over. Going with FWD platforms for it's main vehicles has severly diminished the brand compared to what it was in the 60's(A serious rival to BMW back then).That's one reason why Fiat has never made a success of Alfa.It has not been able to establish Alfa as a credible midline brand offering(above Fiat but below Ferrari and Maserati. With Chrysler Marchionne is hoping to redefine Alfa and Lancia,with Alfa being Sport near luxury and Lancia being Luxury near sport in the market.Both marquees have a long history of making quality appealing higher end cars. All this changed in the 70's.
