WOMPWOMP: Let's Hope Geely's Engineering Doesn't Rub Off On Volvo
When Chinese automaker Geely bought Volvo, a few folks stood around, scratched their heads and asked "Why?" We believe we have your answer right here.

According to AutoExpress, Geely's CK1 recently underwent Latin NCAP testing and did quite badly. So badly, in fact, that the car received no stars and NCAP said that driver protection was "poor for most body regions."

You may say "Hey, maybe it's because it has NO airbags." While that may be a valid argument in some circles, take a close look at the structural integrity -- or lack thereof -- at the A-pillar.

But before the stereotypes start flying around the comments, realize that not all Chinese cars do poor in crash testing. Apparently the Great Wall X420 off-roader did well in tests for the Austrailian NCAP.

So that’s why it bought Volvo! Ambitious Chinese car maker Geely has been shown up on ?the safety front after one of its exported models received zero stars in the first-ever round of Latin American NCAP crash tests.

So bad was the result of the Geely CK1 saloon that Latin NCAP – closely affiliated to the Euro organisation – declared driver protection was “poor for most body regions”. The Geely was ?one of nine cars tested – chosen for their popularity in the region – and had no airbags as standard...

I think it is clear that owning Volvo not only gives Geely access to the US market. It also gives them engineering expertize to make their own vehicles more crash worthy.Volvo is expert at this.I think that their learning curve in auto construction is going to rachet up 200 percent in the next couple of years. This will allow them to be successful in a lot of markets.

I am expecting the next Geely to look hauntingly like a Volvo 240...
