Audi's are not based on mass market cars.
Audi's core cars, the A4 and A6, are constructed on platforms created exclusively by Audi, and not shared by VW. The cars are also manufactured in Audi exclusive plants. Again, not shared by VW.
The A8 platform was also created by Audi and loaned to VW for the ill-fated Phaeton. The A8 is constructed in an exclusive aluminum-savvy Audi factory that shares no VW manufacturing output.
Although the forthcoming TT is based on the same acclaimed platform as the MKV GTI and R32, Audi has vastly altered it to be comprised of 69% aluminum and hold a suite of high-tech gear well ahead of anything VW is currently using. The changes were so dramatic that Audi had to manufacture it in its own factory.
Audi-engineered engines include: the 2.0TFSI (not a VW engine even though it's shared), the 3.2 FSI (an Audi-exclusive engine, not the same as the Golf's 3.2 liter steel engine) and the stunning 420hp 4.2 FSI in the RS4.
Lexus, Acura and Infiniti on the other hand base all their cars on existing high-volume platforms from their parent companies (Toyota, Honda, and Nissan) that are assembled in the same factories.
Get your facts straight please.
