Rumor: Bmw 2-Series in the works! M2 a possibility!
The new trend in the automotive business is to build smaller and more eco-friendly cars, and it appears that Bmw wants to follow this path in order to improve its sales. First vehicle developed by Bmw will be the 2-Series. How do we know this? Well. Bmw filed U.S. trademark applications for these designations: 228, 230, and 235. If you are not a Bmw fan, we will tell you that -28, -30, and -35 suffixes come from the six-cylinder engine these cars will carry under the hood. Still, Bmw could also offer a model equipped with a four-cylinder engine.

Oh Boy another new model from BMW..."crickets"...

Ladies and gentlemen, I am partially excited because this means the return of the original 3 series. Small, light, decent power. They may finally get it right with this one.

As against positioning the 1-Series itself in this compact, eco-friendly class? Why so much fragmentation, and how many of these divisions will survive in the long term (looking at you X6 & 5-Series GT)?

With the horrible sales numbers in the US, I would not be surprised if the 2-Series became the new 1-Series in the US with a hatch and four-door sedan variant. The current 1-Series became the entry level performance oriented coupes and convertibles.

After reading the comments, MorePower has it figured out. BMW AG is going to name the new 1 Series an Eco- friendly model (the hard get FWD model) which will be the entry-level BMW as the 3 has moved so far up market. And the next 1 Series will become the 2 Series (F30 chassis-RWD as god intended) and for the US will be 228i and 235i. So they are going switch the models around. Now where is the 4 Series? And the 8 Series is never coming back, the E63/E34 6 Series (04-10) and upcoming F12 Coupe & F13 Cabriolet are the technoligical replacments for the E31 8 Series. There is no real spriitual successor to the E24 6 Series 77-89.

BMW AG did all the things with the E63/E64 6 Series that they did not get to do with the E31 8, cabriolet, 6-cylinder, M, etc.

Oh, and an M2 would be cool. Even closer the E30 M3. It could be done as they have not used the suffix in the past! Which why we have a 1M, which I don't like. M2!!!!!
