In-Depth Insight Into BMW's 6-Series Coupe Concept From The Designer Himself
I think I have gotten tired of quoting BMWNA CEO, Jim O'Donnell, saying that the new 6-Series will be one of the best looking BMWs in years. Ah, crap. It happened, again.

Regardless, there seems to be two groups in the BMWphile camp: one who found the "Bangle-era" designs too out there and far too progressive, and another who thought they were the cat's pajamas.

But when BMW dropped the cloth from its 6-Series Concept, there were gasps. O'Donnell was right, the car is a truly special piece.

If you're intrigued by the design concepts and how the car came to be, make sure to check out BMWBlog's interview with Nader Faghihzadeh, the man who's responsible for the BMW 6-Series Concept Coupe and Gran Coupe.

The new BMW 6 Series Coupe took its veil off at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and in our opinion, the design came as a relief to those who were concerned BMW is going down the path of safe and conservative designs.

While more of an evolutionary design, the new 6 Series Coupe brings a lot of unique design lines and sets the stage for the revolutionary 6er that will come in 7 years from now.

To learn more about the car, its philosophy and design challenges, BMWBLOG spent some time around the car and in-car with the young and talented Nader Faghihzadeh, Exterior Designer of BMW 6 Series Coupe and Gran Coupe, as well as the man that drew the 7 Series interior...

If you cover the BMW logo, the car looks like any other car. It is boring, the Bangle bimmers were some different.
For me missing the BMW spirit in new 6 series. BMW spirit like exist in 635 CS and 2002 tii.

I agree it is the best looking BMW in years. I hope the production model remains very close to the concept but production model should have wheels more pushed towards the corners especially front end.

(Some people just KNOW how to DESIGN and BUILD cars. Where does that come from? Can it be taught?)

It's one of the best looking BMW in years, but compare it to the previous generation's downright ugly 5, awkward 7, angular and disjointed Z4, uber-yawner 6. Yes, BMW has stepped up its styling game in a good way, but this car falls well-short of inciting widespread applause. Or inspiring. Though it is much better looking than the previous 6, it still looks... well... boring.

Oh, BTW, hauling out chief designer Nader Faghihzadeh to sing the praises of this unexciting design reminds me so much of when BMW paraded Chris Bangle around the world to explain why their Flame Surface styling language was really attractive to the trained and sophisticated eye, and those who didn't see that beauty and harmony needed to be educated.

If a car is gorgeous, you don't need someone to explain it to you. You already know.

All said and done, boring or not, I predict BMW will make its unit sales numbers, and continue to remain consistently profitable. That's an easy prediction :-)

well, whatever your opinion of Bangle and his flame surfacing, or his being "paraded around to educate people on why it was attractive", two facts remain:
1) the cars designed under his watch always handily outsold the previous models, and perhaps even more importantly
2) those design themes were copied in one form or another by just about every other manufacturer. That "Bangle Butt" trunk, for example, now resides on every Camry, Avalon, ES350, etc. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, he must be pretty flattered.

You can love it, you can hate it, but it's hard to argue it did one thing remarkably well -- it got people talking about (and copying) BMW's.

JRobUSC says "...That "Bangle Butt" trunk, for example, now resides on every Camry, Avalon, ES350, etc."

In *my* opinion, the "Bangle butt" trunk, as first seen in the 2002 model year 7 series, had the notable characteristics of (a) being the size of dining room table, (b) looking like it was "stuck on," lacking cohesive flow and stlystic integration, and (c) tail lights that looked like they came from another car. To the best of my knowledge, NOBODY has followed this example.

Meanwhile, the swoopy headlights that Asian cars have had for decades have made their way to BMW's cars (and others, too). "Flame Surface," once touted as BMW's bold and innovative styling direction, is gone, an admission that what everyone was saying was true: It was different, yes, but definitely not pretty.

I believe the Flame Surface era BMWs sold because they were BMW. Few people bought them for their looks, but rather, in spite of them. But that's just *my* opinion.

@Rob:
To be fair, one should give credit to Hyundai for the Bangle butt, for this is where Bangle copied it from in the firs place.

This car is great outside and inside but I also still loving Bangle design because He puted something different in each model.

Because he likes it, and it does the job? FWIW, I don't subscribe to the principle of "purchase the most your income permits." Perhaps this guy is on the same page.

say what you want about bangle but there isn't a single car brand today that doesn't incorporate some for of "flame surface" styling or "tiered" trunk.

the man was ahead of his time!
