Pontiac Falls From Muscle Car Glory to Graveyard
DETROIT — Pontiac, the brand that invented the muscle car under its flamboyant engineer John Z. DeLorean, helped Burt Reynolds elude Sheriff Justice in “Smokey and the Bandit” and taught baby boomers to salivate over horsepower, but produced mostly forgettable cars for their children, will endure a lonely death on Sunday after about 40 million in sales.

It was 84 years old. The cause of death was in dispute. Fans said Pontiac’s wounds were self-inflicted, while General Motors blamed a terminal illness contracted during last year’s bankruptcy. Pontiac built its last car nearly a year ago, but the official end was set for Oct. 31, when G.M.’s agreements with Pontiac dealers expire.

“They were C.P.R.-ing a corpse for a long time,” said Larry Kummer, a retired graphic artist who has owned more than two dozen Pontiacs and runs the Web site PontiacRegistry.com.

The G.M. brand that was advertised for “driving excitement,” Pontiac brought Americans the Bonneville, GTO, Firebird and other venerable nameplates. Sportier than a Chevrolet but less uppity than an Oldsmobile or Buick, the best Pontiacs, recognizable by their split grille and red arrowhead emblem in the middle, were stylish yet affordable cars with big, macho engines.

Pontiac could have been saved. If Suzuki,Saab,Buick,Lincoln,Kia and Hyundai were able to make it,they could have. The GTO,G8 GXP,Trans Am and Solstice were all great cars. The GTO styling was not up to par with the competition. Its motor and tranny were great. The G8 was fantastic for its price. It also performed great against the competition. The F body trans am is just a classic. That motor and tranny are bullet proof. The LS1 was easy to mod. I should know I own one with 650whp.I think if the Solstice was designed more like the Sky it would have sold more. It was a 260 hp,turbo rear wheel drive roadster with some pretty impressive specs. http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2009/pontiac/solstice/gxp_roadster/3023/specifications/index.html

What is the point when its essentially a Cadillac with a different badge? The aztec is what comes to mind with Pontiac.

If Aztec is what comes to mind when you hear Pontiac, you are a cynic.

gonna miss the glory days of firebird, but thats about it.. pontiac aztec, vibe, torrent, grand am, grand prix... nothing that brought excitement with that crap, and the G8 just pissed me off with the styling ( totally tried to rip off the M3 )... good riddance !!

To name one car that killed pontiac would be a mistake... there were lots of cars that dilluted the pontiac image... aztek, montana, g3,g5,torrent, vibe... the list goes on and on.

Wake up, engineers and designers! Factory workers are NOT the main cause!! Or the Unions!

Just a suggestion: If you don't know how to design and build cars, two words -- REVERSE ENGINEER!!! Smart people do it all the time...the concept has been around for eons ask any up and coming maker or "established" ones...(hi Hyundai / Lexus)

Imitate! Tell your critics you are unabashedly flattering your intended target of "affection" If what you do doesn't work, try something else....IF you care! If not, then don't hold your hand out for billions!!!

In a nut shell: GM stupidity. When I read that their well selling G8 had no "business case" to be sold as a Chevy, you can only start to see how lack of vehicle passion and a penchant for avoiding mistakes have led to a bureaucracy that was geared towards mederocracy.

It will catch up to GM again. It's the same thinking that seriously led them to think that they could sell Opel when almost every single car (not truck) platform is based on Opel. With a yawn we will see the rest of GM fade into history.

Having a modded G8 GT sitting in the garage, I am not sad about this news. Let us be honest, that car would be about 1/2 as interesting if Pontiac was still alive. I LOVE driving around a modern 376 ci V8. What other 4 door can/could you buy new for $26k that compares?
