OUCH: Writer Calls 2011 Infiniti QX56 "The Biggest Loser"

OUCH: Writer Calls 2011 Infiniti QX56
Well, people may have given us some trouble when we just came out and told you what the Spies really thought of the 2011 Infiniti QX56 when it debuted. We nicknamed it after Tom Carvel's infamous "Fudgie the Whale."

Funny thing is, we weren't the only one making cracks about it in the pressroom, the only difference is we had the brass to talk about it.

Thankfully, someone else has come out and is telling it how it is: Scott Burgess, you've got the Spies' respect.

But before you harpoon Burgess or even us, realize it hasn't only been a slugfest and that we're all "bias." Burgess acknowledges the 2011 QX has a fantastic motor, the only problem is it is hampered with its "road manners." Secondly, we give credit where it's due: the QX's interior is a nice place to be. We dig it.

In the TV show "The Biggest Loser," morbidly obese people fight through exercises and chocolate to gain fame and fortune as a thinner version of themselves. It's a show about potential and overcoming adversity. Inspiration blubbers up as bellies wilt away.

In the automotive world, the Biggest Loser is the 2011 Infiniti QX56 — and there's no hope it's going to transform into a svelte G37 sedan. No, at the end of the season, the QX56 will still blot out the sun when parked on top of a hill.

There's nothing inspiring about this made-over SUV, though it's bigger and wider than ever before. Here's the tale of the tape: 79.9 inches wide, 75.8 inches tall and 208.3 inches long. For comparison, the 2009 Hummer H2 — the poster child for excess — is 79.2 inches tall, 81.2 inches wide and 203.5 inches long — yet I have not seen one environmentalist protesting outside an Infiniti dealership.

Stop reading and take a good look at this SUV. Soak it all — it will take a while...

I don't want to bash this car too much. I love big, luxury SUVs, and the ones that you can take off road are dying out...

This vehicle is painfully ugly. I can't stand to see it either in person or in pictures. I can't wait until I no longer see them.

Please tell the reviewer that this is a large SUV. People who buy these vehicles like having a higher view point and are not going to taking corners in third gear.

Styling wise it is a big looser also the rebadged Nissan, the Patrol. But i have kept new Patrol for some time and everything else is great. It is a big step forward from the the last Nissan Patrol. Like before it is great on dunes but now it also drives nicely on roads and handles very well. If you close your eyes and experience the drive from a passenger seat you will feel you are in a much smaller and lighter car say a BMW X5 or Mercedes ML. It handles much better than similar size trucks like LX570, Escalde, GL, RR Sport...etc. Only if the design was half as good looking as the competitors it would have been class leader IMO.

I actually saw the one for the first time on the road the other day. It looks much better in person than it does on websites or pictures.

I would definitely take this over an escalade anyday. Nicer looking, better interior and it will actually go off road. A good alternative to the range rover if you need something that is very capable offroad but bigger

this car is an absolute monstrosity... in person it is just overdone and gaudy in every possible way.

Well, it IS the Detroit News. They are not the most import friendly source out there.

It's like looking at the Sun.

(You HAVE to look away! .....my eyes, my eyes....they hurt so badly...awwwwww)

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. (Too "bad" I lost my sight!)

The QX is a great looking vehicle both in pictures and in person. Who carries if it's too big. It's a full sized SUV. Compare it to the Navigator or Escalade both are also 5,000 lbs. vehicles. It's supposed to be made for power and comfort which it does well. Infiniti makes great vehicles including this one.
