Audi RS5 Vs. BMW M3 Video Shootout: Which Is The Fastest On The Real Road?
The new RS5 is one of the best front-engined Audis ever. The firm has found new-found levels of throttle adjustability and a near GT-R level of drivetrain complexity. But is it good enough to topple the BMW M3? Autocar took the pair to Millbrook's Alpine Hill Route to see what came out on top in the battle of the B-road super-coupes.

I wouldn't call that a real road, it was a twisty undulating track with gravel traps. Probably the only area the RS5 and keep up with the M3 is slow corners.

bmwcs - are you saying that "real roads" are perfectly clean, dry and smooth with perfectly banked turns?

no, im saying your not catching air, and drifting, at race track speeds like in the video. Its not a bad track they were evenly matched on it. On more conventional tracks the M3 is considerably faster though.

Nice video, it said they were just about even on the windy/slow road. The Audi had better traction out of really tight corners b/c of awd. The BMW had much better balance.

better balance as in overall package or performance...it seemed to have as much if not more body roll, diving while breaking, and drifting (I know that's what everyone likes but is it faster?)...

Yeah its faster. Have you read any of the 6+ reviews the M3 beat the RS5 in.

Both awesome cars, but I would have to take the RS5.

Hard decision, but when it comes down to it, I think I would prefer the RS5 just because my loyalty lies with the VW Group.

Ill take the M3, its the better performance car. Its the benchmark. The RS5 lost steam going up the hill.lol.

the rs5 will be more rare, the m3 will have a huge price advantage but for people with the extra $ you cant go wrong with the rs5...
the m3 im sure is faster on most tracks, but you will have to be a better driver in the m3 to win, the rs5 will be easier for the avg joe.
as far as what would i buy, that easy.... which ever offers a better lease or finance, thats what im taking home..

How is the M3 difficult to drive? Its simple, put it in gear and hit the gas and when you need to stop, hit the brake pedal. Now, was that so hard? The new M3 is so much more real world driving than the E46. Yes, I have driven both. The M3 is a race car that can be used as a daily driver.

Would be interesting if they swapped positions and did it again.

RS5.
It's newer, slightly better looking and of course- more exclusive.....

Both great cars. Would be lucky to have either. But since I have not driven either car and both seem to have similar performance numbers, It'll come down to looks, fit and finish, everyday drivability and relative exclusivity. Since I spend most of my driving time on crowded I-80 and not on the Nurburgring it will be the RS5 hands down.

idiotic approach. M3 should have been in front to see if the RS5 can keep up. most of the time the M3 was sitting on the RS5's tail
