If You Had To Choose, What Should BMW Bring To The USA? X1 Or 1-Series Hatchback?

If You Had To Choose, What Should BMW Bring To The USA? X1 Or 1-Series Hatchback?
You know, it seems that in the United States we don't get all the luck sometimes. Remember the BMW E36 M3? The one that didn't have the European-spec high-output motor? Yeah, we wound up with the 240 horsepower version and not the 321 pony maker. Also, we missed out when Audi debuted the RS6 Avant with that killer bi-turbo V10 powerplant.

The list goes on.

Given the chance to pick between a couple of BMW's that we don't get, which would you have? A BMW X1 or a BMW 1-Series hatchback?

Interestingly enough, while walking through Georgetown in Washington D.C., I actually saw a diplomat-plated 1-Series hatch in black. All I have to say, it looks pretty good in person...

PS - The X1 is coming to our shores, the question is only hypothetical.

If I had to choose, I would post the article on the 2012 Chrysler 300 un-disguised that I submitted this morning...

(X1, what do you think? Crossover's do better than hatches here in the states)

I agree, crossovers sell better than hatchbacks in the states.

Let's see no premium brand has be able to sell a hatchback in the U.S. and they're only bring 500 X1 to the states, ergo, does it really matter.

1 series hatch! As the owner of a supercharged 318ti, MINI GP, a 535xit, and former owner of a 325xit, BMW can sell hatchbacks in the US (I also own a 1988 M5 and 1973 2002, so my BMW dedication can't be questioned). The 535 wagon is coming up on lease. We did not order a 5gt or a 328iT, but our MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL 4 should be built this month. Would have bought a 123d hatch or 135i if offered here (a 135i M hatch, I might buy 2)

I've seen an X1 on the street in San Diego too about a month ago.

I've been wanting a white 123d for a while. Europe can keep the ugly BMW X1. They can also have back the 5 series GT...yuck.

1 Series hatch. I'd buy one. Of course we'll get the heavier X1 which I won't buy.

I would love to have the 120d over here, five door.

Bring the hatch to compete with the A3 & the X1. BMW should kill off the GT and bring back the touring wagons, but that's not going to happen with all of the money they make off of the X5 and X6.

X1 with a 4-cylinder twin-turbo diesel for those of us in the snow-belt region.

I would say the X1 because unless a hatchback is in the $20k range, it will not sell. I like wagons and hatches personally, but in the real world, they do not do so well in the luxury brand segment.
I do wish they had brought out the 5 series wagon and not the GT. The main reason the hatches dont sell is because they never have aggressive lease numbers.

to pugproud.... i was once given a 5 series wagon as a loaner car, i must admit, i was very impressed, but i would definitely bring over the X1 over the 1 hatchback
