Not Ready For Prime Time? Chevrolet Cruze Test Drive

Not Ready For Prime Time? Chevrolet Cruze Test Drive
It's an old story: Detroit automaker does a gut check, creates a car it says is a credible rival to Asian brands — really, truly, honest. This time, maybe not the same old story. The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, on sale since September, finally seems a compact from General Motors that Honda, Toyota, Ford, Hyundai and Nissan should take seriously. It replaces the Chevy Cobalt, which was OK in its day, but that day is long past.

The Cruze test car — a nicely equipped 2LT, $21,890 — had its issues. In fact, if one were feeling mean, and choosing to define the car by its worst moments, the summary would be: guttural engine, jerky transmission, clunky suspension.

This is a GM chassis (Delta) not an old Daewoo chassis. Mechanically it shares more with the Opel Astra and upcoming Buick compact than any other cars.

GM has designers world wide and this car is a world car and sold very well in Europe and Daewoo only helped in it's design not a bad thing seeing how hot Korean cars are selling today.

Secondary target: Young professionals, 25 to 35, who want to appear adult and responsible.

...or just broke as hell.

Wow. Its not a good sign when USA Today hammers a car in a review.

You mean that USA Today the acclaimed auto magazine that test more cars than Motor Trend and Consumers Reports? WOW! That is bad if you believe it!

Who cares, the Cruze from reviews I've read have been good for the most part if not very good. Its an economy car, its not a luxury sedan, and for the lemmings that jump on everything they read find other cars that this source has discredited and see what you think....

uhm, can you explain how the timing is bad if it came out shortly before its updated competitors?

I think Black Dynamite(fucking awesome movie by the way) is saying that with the new import and domestic cars literally right around the corner, in this economy, most smart shoppers will wait to these other cars come to market to compare them all together.

Example:

If I wanted to buy a Mustang with the 5L engine(I don't but let's say I did) and I heard from good sources that the Camaro Z28 was going to be released in a month. Unless there is amazing financing, I'm going to wait to test drive the Camaro Z28 and perhaps the new Challenger.

Yes, but that assumes the majority of shoppers will be smart shoppers. By getting to market first they are able to increase market share, and then it becomes harder for the competitors to gain it back. For example look at the xbox 360 and the ps3. The ps3 is the superior platform no doubt about it, but because microsoft released their xbox first they were able to take a much larger bite into sony's potential sales.

So joe, You're saying only stupid people will buy this car? I agree.

I can buy a:

Chevy Cruz LTZ for $22,890 w/ 138hp

or

Honda Civic Si for $22,405 w/ 198hp

GM, what are you with the money I gave you? You can do better than the Cruz or at least make price it to make it competitive.

Should have been at least make it competitive by pricing it lower than the competition.

Sorry, GM's move of changing their slogan and their mismanagement of advertising dollars angers me because it looks like they have learned nothing.

The Civic Si is rated at 21 city and 29 highway, hardly what I would call competitive.

Lol.I used to sell Hondas I'd really like to see you get a Civic Si for that price. It wont happen. Also the Si uses premuim gas.Honda Civic Si for $22,405

Believe me, I can get a Civic Si at that price or below. It's a Civic, not a R32 or a GTI with a manual and sunroof only. If you want, pay me 10% of the purchase price and I'll find one for you below that cost.

I should mention that I live in California and know how to shop & buy cars.

Chevy never sticks with a compact car long enough to refine it.

OK so what about the rest of the automakers who are seeing double digit growth as well. China only wants GM?
