Leadership through passion: Audi RS4 family

The new Audi RS 4 incorporates countless new features, many of them with their origins in the world of motor sport. Most notably, there is the V8 engine with an output of 420 bhp. This is the first time that a manufacturer has combined petrol direct injection with a high-revving concept. Engine speeds of up to 8,250 rpm are possible. Another highlight is the suspension with the latest generation of quattro permanent four-wheel drive with asymmetric/dynamic torque split and Dynamic Ride Control. Like the RS 4 saloon, the Cabriolet and Avant have also been subjected to a rigorous regime of weight reduction measures to make sure that they are equally sporty. Despite the systematic application of lightweight construction principles, all RS 4 versions feature luxurious equipment that singles out the Audi RS 4 as a high-performance vehicle suitable for everyday driving.

This will be a good shot out between the RS4 and M3. Whose gonna buy the S4? RS4 (3700lbs and 60 in 4.8; 1/4 in 13.2). Current M3 (3400lbs and 60 in 5; 1/4 in 13.5). New M3 will most likely be faster because Audi loves to weigh down their rides. More magnesium and aluminum please!

Let the bias commence!!! Sunny is off to a good start...

The new M3 (2007?) will be more of a match, but until then enjoy second place on the track.

Until a proper comparison can be given you have to go with pure speculation.

However this own site has reported the following:

0-100 km/h
Audi RS4 4.6
BMW M3 CS 5.4

0-200 km/h
Audi RS4 15.8
BMW M3 CS 18.8

Quarter mile (402 m)
Audi RS4 12.8
BMW M3 CS 13.6

200 - 0 km/h (brakes)
BMW M3 CS 146,0
Audi RS4 148,6

Slalom speed
Audi RS4 91 km/h
BMW M3 CS 89 km/h

A-Sprint (special track)
Audi RS4 54,5 secs
BMW M3 CS 56,0

So I hope the new M3 comes ready to play, cus the old one will have to be second fiddle for a bit. Some of you BMW guys kill me. If that blue and white propeller ain't on it is is junk. Get your out of the sand and take a look around there are quite a few cars out there that are quite good. BMW rocks but there comparable choices out there too.

Ever thought that someone that owns another brand isn't a moron?

My daily driver is an Stage II A4, no doubt not up to your snuff. My SCCA toy is a S4. You got enough nads there to actually put your car on the track? Or are you just an armchair racer? High on opinion, low in self esteem and track talent.

Easy to talk but you gotta walk the walk..

Why you lurking in an Audi post? Just curious.

Envious?
Or mearly trying to scope out the competiton?

I guess I need to lurk in the BMW posts for a bit. No telling what I will find.

Funny how all three brands simply excite passion in their owners. Nothing wrong with that.

When I buy my next I will drive all three brands and see which is the best for me. Love the pocket rocket approach of the BMW's, however the styling on some BMW is starting to get a pacific rim feel (even BMW admitted that). The MB might be a bit more of an AAP image than what I want (not on AARP just yet), The Audi's I will have to drive overall they appeal to me greatly. But you never know. right now not too many Pacific Rim cars i would ponder.

Looking great.

Yeah, the RS4 Cabriolet sure looks great. The power and technology in this thing is utterly brilliant.

I also LOVE reading posts from people who know nothing about cars bash Audi. It's fun because it shows just how naive, misinformed, and brainwashed some BMW/Merc fans are.

Anyone with an iota of car knowledge knows that the RS4 Cabriolet is built on an Audi-exclusive platform. It has absolutely zero parts shared with the VW Jetta.

It makes me proud to be an intelligent Audi owner after reading thoroughly incorrect nonsense from anti-Audi fools.

Thanks Nate for posting factually wrong information, thereby disqualifying yourself as a person of any integrity. Not to mention proving again and again just how intellectually superior Audi drivers are.

Keep it up, I love it!

That was a numb nuts comment "Jetta with a drop top". Obviously you don't read too much, They share little structurally in that regard. You even find VW/Audi parts on Porsches too (imagine that). At least they don't seem to mind sharing costs. They prefer to concentrate on performance not just a logo.

The new BMW "Never" Ad makes me snicker. “We will "NEVER" share anything or consider anything outside BMW. Hmmmm, to me seems to be a lot like "Incest is Best". Typical of the elitist attitude your comment portrayed. Obviously there is an “I am better than you” in there some where. I have nothing against BMW, MB or any Marquee just the silly school girl antics some of the owner have.

Grow up.

But I Guess you feel that Lambo (under Audi ownership and mgmt BTW) that sucked your headlights out as it went by, was simply another VW too...so is Bugatti... and Bentley....for the matter.

To be quite honest you would be hard pressed to find an article anywhere that said any BMW was better than those Marquees. Except maybe in the BMWCCA newsletter. Hey, do they do still have great decoder ring with membership? And that secret handshake was the bomb!

If anything. Being under the VW banner is not nearly like being under a GM banner. Not just grills and tail lights separate them. So read before you express your ignorance, you might just learn something.

I chose Audi.

I have an A4 sedan and Cabriolet, and chose each car after thorough test drives with competing BMW and Merc models.

Money was not an issue, as it isn't for the majority of luxury car buyers in the world. It certainly wasn't for me.

As a North American, I'm happy that Audi’s cost slightly less here due to the company’s aggressive price strategy to increase market share; although it had nothing to do with my decision to choose Audi. In most of the rest of the world, Audi’s cost as much or more than BMW’s.

I loved the 330i I tested, but found the A4 quattro a superior car overall. The goes for my same for my A4 cabriolet 3.0. I’m continuing to test drive BMW (Merc is out of the picture for me: their engines or inferior and need forced induction too keep up with Audi and BMW). The brilliant combination of quality, design, ergonomics, all wheel dominance, engine sophistication, and that elusive ‘feel good’ quotient makes Audi the car for me.

So it has nothing to do with price, but I sure feel smart to have chosen a car that is both better and cheaper than a BMW, at least in my eyes.

Interestingly, I’ve been tested the new BMW 330i and the outgoing M3 because I’m interested in a rear-drive performance car. They’re both great, nicely focused and well balanced sports cars. However, now with the release of the RS4 in NA, and the growing adoption of rear-biased quattro, I’ve decided to stick with Audi some more.

BMW makes great cars as well. (Although I wouldn’t say the same for the overpriced reliability disasters that Merc manufactures). I just think Audi’s are better for me, regardless of price.

To each his own I suppose.

Before you try to say something against the RS4, take a look at this.

Faster than the M5, ties the M6 at the ring.

Are you talking about yourself. If you look up, you will see the RS4 beating the M5 and the Dodge Viper at the ring. Before the new M3 shows up, the RS4 is the best. Eventough I am not the biggest fan of these, this does look to be the next super sedan.

The M5 has 80 more horsepower than the RS4. When people say that the only reason the RS4 beats the M3 is because it has more power, shouldn't 80 horsepower help the M5 as well. I believe the power to weight ratio for the M5 is better than the one for the RS4. Many people like Sunny have proclaimed that the RS4 is so crappy that even the much bigger M5 would be better on the track. Well it's not. Plus, it also beats the Dodge Viper. In the end, you can ignore facts, and use your imagination to make yourself happy, I bet that is what Sunny does.
Also, the next generation M3 will most likely be better than the current RS4. It will have similar amounts of power, and slightly less weight. But you have to remember, that in a year or two after the next M3 comes out, there will be a new RS4. It will be built on a completely new architecture, that will eliminate most of the front heaviness of the current generation. I now proclaim that the 2010 RS4 will be better than the 2008 M3.

Funny how you have mentioned money as a prerequisite to owning a BMW. I guess money is a prerequiste to a degree, however money is not a prerequsite to knowledge. You seem to dead on proof of that. You continually misquote facts, you point and snear like in Jr. High. to any brand other than a BMW.

I do for the record like BMW, however I prefer to gauge the market for my needs and not push my wants and desires on others and ridicule them for their choices. That is childish.

You obviously have a self-esteem issue; because you ridicule those who fail to agree with your opinion, refuse to believe facts that are substantiated in writing. (it can’t be true BMW is the best, sacrilege!).

Many BMW owners I know fall into 2 decidedly different camps,

A: The successful professional that has owned a variety of makes and models over the years and truly enjoys his vehicle. Money is typically not much of an object and he is confident in himself and his accomplishments. He has seen the world and realizes there are many innovative companies out there. Most fall in this camp.

B: The qausi-successful newbies that are so social conscious and scream “Look at me!, I am here”. You know them well, 50% of their entire income is in a vehicle that professes their “status”. They actually view their car as an “investment” They have a cute Prada toting girl friend or spouse and are more concerned that the Bra on the car must match her Prada purse, than actual performance. They are so concerned about social ranking and the fact that they are right in everything they do. (Noble, maybe, but short sighted is more accurate) To them any choice other than theirs is a threat. This is typically due to the lack of confidence and experience that life gives.

By looking at those two owners I see you in camp B 100%. You are high on opinion, low on knowledge, but you do have conviction in your choices. Bet you haven’t owned that BMW for long. The simple fact that Audi eventually dominates almost any motor sports venue it chooses to enter must boggle your mind (how can that be? There is not BMW logo on it).

Thank God that most of the BMW owners are not like you in camp B.

You speak volumes of your true ignorance every time you make a comment.

What do you drive? a Tercel? or I guess maybe a Kia Rio. I bet you wear it well, you manly hunk you! I may have under cut my friends that own a BMW by assuming you do indeed own one, you can pony up no proof.

Man I bet you beat that car like a Hillbillie beats his wife. Good luck you have proven yourself unworthy of the discussion and entirly outgunned. Run like the wind my little grasshopper, and save it and live for another day.

Remeber u(some Audi guys) give the same excuse when people compare M5 with the Audi S6.

Many of Audi fans say wait for the upcoming Audi RS6,then we will compare.
Therfore same applies to u or everybody else here.

Face it.If u want to compare now.

Compare THe Current M3 with the RS4
AND
NEW S6 to New M5.

Till now,i see the comparisons between the old Lexus LS with new S class and relatively new A8,7 Series and Infiniti M45.
But yeah u have to agree, otherwise leave it.
U don't have the gutz to hear or bear.

No hard feeling, just to remind u.

Well, even i think RS4 doesn't directly competes against the M3 or M5.Becuase of 4 doors and that extra wait.
And the rear of this RS4 Cabrio is still the old one.THe old A4's.This need to be changed.

otherwise RS4 is a cool car.It got the looks, power and it's spacious, got the space of a sedan. To me it look something like 'RAPIDE'A 4 door but still didn't lost any lines or appeal.
R u getting me.

I will take the RS4 over any M3,current or the upcoming.

Not majorly because RS4 is a very very good alternative, but because new M3 is a step backword or should i say bland.
I didn't like the new 3 series's styling. It's horribly designed or an Overdone car.

BMW 740iL
BMW M5
Porsche Boxster (BTW) it has VW parts in it and my little A4 Stage II has Boxster brakes on it too, just a bolt on... hmmm parts sharing works all ways.

If you indeed have a stable of such pedigree I want to see them side by side some where, not individual pics. I believe that alone might silence most of the grief you get.

I like Audi alot, especially the new TT, but the rs4 just cant compare with the M3 on looks. I dont jnow, maybe thats a bad picture, but the RS4 looks like a hairdressers car. I swear it looks so freakin girly its crazy. The M3 is just so nice. I dont really care about horsepower, when are you going to take your car to the track? I know that I wouldnt go to a track, because there arent any within 100 miles. The M3 just beats the Audi in almost everything in my opinion.

The 2003 M3 CSL will take the Audi 2006 RS4 on the track any day of the week. The M3 CSL clocks at 4.7 sec 0-60 mph while the RS4 clocks at 4.8 sec 0-60 mph. And what's most interesting about the two cars is the M3 CSL has a NA in-line 6 engine versus a NA V8 engine in the RS4. So don't get your hopes to high. The 2008 M3 will be even better than the 2003 M3 CSL or so I hear.

RS4 0-60

The 4.8 seconds to 60 on the RS4 are Audi's conservative estimates. The RS4 has already been clocked anywhere between 4.5 and 4.6 seconds to 60 in Euro car magazines.

It's extraordinary that the RS4 can reach such supercar straight-line numbers AND have the weight of AWD and a V8.

What's far more important than straight-line numbers (unless you're a drag racing redneck) is track performance: grip, flexibility, lateral body control. And in those far more important departments, not only does the RS4 surpass the M3 and the M3 CSL, the less powerful S4 also won over the M3 (Top Gear track test, 2004).

Of course the lighter, V6 fitted, non-AWD M3 will be fast in the straight line, but it can't come close to Audi's brilliant one-two punch of quattro and the torque-laden 4.2 V8. The driving sophistication of the Audi far outperforms the M3.

Now, I’m not saying the M3 is not a great car; it is. But recently Audi has been consistently coming up with better overall cars.

I actually really like BMW, but I LOVE Audi. And thank god, since BMW has become such a poser-yuppie cliche.

I can completely understand why people would also choose BMW over Audi. But I can never get why BMW drivers are so insecure about Audi’s obvious rise in power.

Kinda sad really.

So far what you say you have and what you are asked to prove is. Pretty simple, with all of your money you have to have a website.. Or use your myspace site and post it (just in case cash is all tied up in the market.)

Again M3 pales in the 1/4 mile
RS4 beats the M3 7 out of 7 times no contest

Power drifting (a total waste)
M3 beats the RS4 (Duh... RWD vs AWD)

Around the track M3 just can't keep up

http://www.autoclips.net/detail.php?parent=2&id=606&id_video=4383

Basically, with the M3 it is more twitchy and not as surefooted as the RS4. The RS4 may not be as fun, but it takes less driver concentration to go faster due to the fact it is more surefooted.

I'm glad to see some people actually can see how much BMW's are overated, I think the RS4 will be better then the new M3, they'll have the sme story of the M3 has the best handling blah, blah, forget what you herd and call a spade a spade the RS4 is a batter looking car and will probably be faster then the M3. C'mon man the RS4 did the same lap time as the M6 DUDE. Call it what it is, BMW's are not that big a deal these days. Move on.

I think BMW's are generally rated correctly, however some the owners put more stock in to it than they are rated. (ego check) They are historically a class leader but the class is now changing the competition has upped the ante. BMW is starting to feel the heat and they are playing catch up. No doubt the next M3 is going to be a great car. The only problem is the RS4 is here and now, the M3 is sometime next year. They are consistantly get beat in an outclassed car only to play catch up.

Hard to be at the top when everyone is gunning at you.

I guess the question is, are they a leader or a follower?

I will attempt to answer that. The RS4 has the following over the S4

420 hp V8 vs 340 HP
Brakes from a Gallardo
Suspension unique to it
Different bumpers and trim

Primarily the S4 is a solid high end car. The RS4 simply takes it to a higher level and is less civilized.
