Can Cars Like Buick's Regal Help Keep GM In The Running Against The Competition?

From its beginnings as a concept car at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, the 2012 Buick Regal GS has held the automotive world captive. It's a turbo Buick Regal, and that brings to mind the old G-body Regals with its big turbo, rear-wheel drive and box-it-came-in styling.

But the 2012 Regal GS is also a thoroughly modern, turbocharged Buick with a 255-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection, variable valve timing, a six-speed manual transmission and straight-off-the-boat European looks that should get every red-blooded car guy, for perhaps the first time in his life, to take a serious look at Buick.

And that's exactly the point.

more advertisements!

The Lacrosse ones seemed to have worked very well in getting the public's attention, but too bad I don't see many on the road.

evryone wants a sporty car or a sporty looking car unless your in the 60 and above crowd and even thats questionable.....I think this car will help GM in the american sport car market definitley just off the looks of it....now if they go SuperSport aka SS with this and stuff a supercharged corvette V8 in this thing it would draw even more attenton to them. this car has the looks, the power (they could bump it up to 300hp) but this car could be the kay on how amrecians can make a compact sport sedan for the masses

When considering the class it competes in, I would say yes...

Dear GM...This is a tale of General Motors marketing the "All new Sport Injected" Buick Regal Turbo...if the Buick Regal Turbo is "Sport Injected" then why does their website not have the 0-60 times for their "Sport Injected" model? So I went on the website and they had a link to talk to a GM rep and I asked "Fred" the GM rep just a simple question...."what is the 0-60 time for the Buick Regal" Fred said he will find that information for me....after 5 minuts Fred came back and said he could not find that information. I googled it and came up with a 0-60 tiime in 7.5 seconds from MotorTrend a reliable source while Fred was not able to find my information. He said he can not quote independent sources when I said I found it. I said I understand....and he asked me if he could help with anything else? I said YES if GM is going to advertise a sporty product and try to attract younger buyers like myself they should stand by their products and post 0-60 times. I also told Fred that 7.5 seconds is not very good considering the fact the Hyundai Sonata Turbo does it in 6.6 and many V6 offerings beat that as well. If GM wants to be the best it has to have the best products they have to sharpen their pencils if they are going to be competitive in this market.

So there you have it! GM is better yes...Market leader...no. Great products yes...The best products not so much!!! This makes me crazy because they should have made the engine from the regal GS the same tune as the Regal Turbo. they should not have taken the AWD away from the GS then boosted it to over 300HP, just like in the Arial Atom has doen reliably because everyone knows in racing tune that motor is a tank that can get to 500bhp. Then they can compete in between the "world class" Audi S4, BMW 330Xi, Mecedes C350 4matic and Infiniti G37 with AWD and Lexus is350 with AWD and Subaru Impreza WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer evolution. That is the customer they should go after and they can get it if they just put in a different tune and scrap the CAFE b/s because they have a base volume motor already. UGH!

The standard Buick buyer will never go for the Turbo because they don't know what a turbocharger is so what's the point in downgrading it and trying to make it a volume seller when it will be a niche product with a Manuel tranny option? This is MADNESS I say.... Blasphemy!!

GM is still confused.

I still don't think performance cars should be marketed as Buicks, that is what Pontiac was for. I still think they should have kept Pontiac and canceled Buick.

The Lacrosse is good, but seems to compete with Cadi on the luxury spectrum. Cadi should be their single luxury brand. If they need to re-brand Chevy or Cadi in China as Buick, then fine, but leave it there.

You must have never heard of GS (Grand Sport) GNX (Grand National) Turbo 6's are what Buick is known for so a turbo is not out of the question.

This Buick, like all future GM products, can help "save" GM from the competition, seems like that job has been filled by the American tax-payer & the Chinese, if it learns from GM's failures in the past and focuses on offering compelling products that the consumer feels, for whatever reason(s) the consumers chooses, gives the product the competitive advantage over that product's competition.

For GM, and by that Buick, that means compelling design, a feature package that meets or exceeds that determined by the consumer market, price and the perceived vehicle's: quality, reliability & performance.

If it doesn't look like a box from four years out of the past, doesn't drive like a foam mattress, can get out of its own way, doesn't feel cheap, you won't be embarrassed to be seen in it by your friends and/or enemies and it'll last one moment beyond what you need from it - the car will sell.

This new Regal looks very nice indeed, and offers competitive performance. I only wish I could fit in it! :-( I'm a little too tall for the new Hyundai Sonata Turbo as well.

One of these days a company is going to make an affordable sport sedan or coupe that can comfortably accommodate people over 6'4" tall, at least in the front seats if not in the back. I can hardly wait!

This is just watered down American junk. GM needs to stop fk'ng with the public, and retool their lines to offer the European equivalent.

Agreed, just bring them over here as they're built over there and don't worry about the cost...

Every good car they make will help the cause. Should they have kept Pontiac and ditch Buick? I'm not so sure that was the way to go necessarily. Buick had already been solidly in the top 5 of JD Power's initial quality rankings every year. Pontiac didn't have that. It's far easier to add sporty models to a lineup to attract younger (read that as more) buyers while keeping cars like the Lucerne for the already established (read that as loyal) older crowd. Mathematics has a say here. I personally can't stand ANYTHING that bears a GMC badge on it but based on how many people can and end up buying the silly things, it makes money for GM. That's what it boils down to.
