Jeep Wrangler to receive the new Pentastar V6 in 2012
According to the latest reports from Kicking Tires, it appears that Chrysler will introduce on the 2012 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited its brand new 3.6-liter V6 powertrain.

Dubbed Pentastar V6, the new engine made its debut on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but now is also featured on almost all the models from Chrysler’s lineup, such as the 2011 Dodge Charger, 2011 Journey, 2011 Grand Caravan but also on the 2011 Dodge Durango. Still, the bad news is that the 2011 Jeep Wrangler will get the old 3.8-liter V6 delivering just 202 hp.

Everyone wanting a Wrangle please keep your wallets closed for another year. The updated engine will time well with the refresh due out in 2012 as well. Maybe they will get rid of the in-bumper fog lamps and give back the bumper-mounted ones. The Wrangle was never about aerodynamics.

Penta? Isn't that a prefix for 5?

I bet its referring to the Chrysler emblem. Wouldnt a 6 litre V6 be a bit harsh? Unless its a ohv with the power band of a diesel.

I'd wait for the 2012, 202hp is way underpowered for a 4x4, I would hate to do a steep hill climb in deep snow or sand.

202 is not underpowered for off roading unless you are in America. H1 hummers originally came with a 6.2l diesel with less than 200hp and well under 400lb/ft torque. Old land rovers were far less powerful. gearing and torque are what gets you by off roading. too much power is what gets you stuck. Most of us Americans know nothing about off road except true jeep enthusiasts and people like me who knows gearing and suspension are the most important along with proper tires. the old 190hp inline 6 was a great engine in the jeep. Much better than the current V6. A diesel of about 2.4l would be more than adequate for this off road.

Have you ever owned an older Toyota? I am a believer in suspension flex and low gearing, but sometimes you need power for the deep steep stuff, In all of my older Toyotas I have put myself in some dangerous spots because I have powered out doing steep hill climbs, you don't have to be an American to have a capable vehicle, they do build the best off road vehicles.

My 2002 Land Rover Discovery II only has 182 hp and I guarantee I will go through places those trucks with twice my power could only dream about going through.

Does your LR come with lockers? If not the Rubicon or the H-3 would out wheel it.

@ t_bone: "Penta" means five, but when placed beside the word "star it means "five star". This clearly has dual meanings. 5-star is an acronym for "the best there is" (like in 5-star hotel), as well as the fact that the Chrysler corporate logo is a five pointed star inside a pentagonal diamond (also described as a Diamond Star). And there you have it. "Penta" has nothing to do with the number of cylinders.
