Corvette Sales Continue To Decline For Second Year: Should GM Simply Shelve The Icon?

Last week General Motors released the monthly sales report and for the seventh straight month, the number of Corvettes remained higher than 1,000 units. But is there bad news on the horizon? October’s delivery of 1,011 Corvettes marked the sixth straight decline from May’s 1,428 deliveries. October’s sales lagged -12.4% from the 1,154 Corvettes delivered a year ago and year to date sales are running -9.5%.

As far a production numbers, the Bowling Green Assembly Plant produced 616 2011 Corvettes in October 2010. This was 802 units less than the 1,418 Corvettes produced in September 2010. We asked a representative at the plant about the decline and it turns out there was a two week shutdown for plant maintenance.

A agree wholeheartedly but I also think they have done well by this generation. It has seen consistent development and refinement. Now...if they could just get that interior up to snuff!

After reading this headline I have made the decision of quitting Autospies. The inflammatory headlines à la Fox News, fanboy comments, biased reviews and excessive advertising rob this site of any value as a source of auto-related information.

Goodbye Autospies, time did not serve you well.

Win some.... lose some....

It is a valid argument however if they can't make money on it (and we don't know if they do) then why keep it around?

no your wrong 009 its not a Valid argument....your argument rings true for Porsche as the only thing that is selling is hmmm the cars that aren't sports cars the Cayenne and Panamera great cars yes but not the "icon" at Porsche. The "911" has been on decline for how long now, and still with how many iterations sells poorly. Not to mention that segment in general is doing poorly as much as I love it the M6 has been a poor seller as of late, you just create these rediculous articles simply to create arguments among different brands which somewhos ends up being about BMW despite your unfounded bias for Audi...typical..

There is certain value in a Halo car for sure.

However the Corvette is moving only around 1100 units a month on average. Is that enough volume to justify a dedicated plant and UAW payroll for 1100 units?

Don't get me wrong, I like the Corvette but the economics of maintaining the facility and profitability must be weighed.

The BMW M6 and Z4 M should have been shelved a while ago.

Just build one less than the demand.

REALLY?? The title of this article alone makes me shake my head in disappointment (then again, it's nothing new for the site). C'mon autospies, you know Chevy is getting ready to release an all new Corvette in 2012. Besides, you gotta give the corvette some credit. It has been mostly unchanged for the past 7 years and has doe pretty well considering how similar it looked to the previous generation, plus it's not like it was filled with cutting edge technology or spectacular fit and finish to begin with.

Also, common consumer sense would tell me that new car buyers want the newest and the greatest. The Corvette has its appeal, but people who know cars know the Corvette's age. Have you considered that maybe people are waiting for the new Corvette to arrive? From what I've heard, it could turn out to be pretty darn impressive.

Valid point but few people will wait a full year as evidenced by the spiraling sales figures.

No. While I do not particlarly like American cars except for a few like the CTS V, the vette is the American Icon. It is proof America can build a supercar, albeit cheap interior and old tech engines, but it still gets the job done and keeps the price lower making it the only affordable supercar, and the best bang for your buck in the world. There are too many Corvette loyalist out there to quit making it.

GM should take a lesson from FORD with its Mustang on how to keep a model fresh and exciting. The Corvette has a great heritage that GM
chooses to ignore.

Make and affordable V6 vette using the solstice platform.

You're Killing me LARRY!!!

No V-6, just redesign the car and bring back the Hardtop model, bare bones Corvette at a price of $40,500.

@ PUGPROUD: Are you serious? Read what you have typed. GM chooses to ignore the Corvette heritage? It seems you have just learnt about the Corvette yesterday. Corvette is honoured by GM every chance it gets. And that's a fact. Witness the dedication to the Le Mans-winning CR6.

@ Agent009: The Corvette is still very relevant in every way. I am certain that when the price is taken into consideration the 1100 that they sell per month is good enough. Sure they would love to sell more (like 300,000 per year?!?), but even if they were being sold at say 30,000 each, it would not be the kind of car that every 30k shopper would need. It's just the way the cookie crumbles. I haven't taken delivery of mine yet <clasping hands and commencing prayer that I will one day> so they can forget about closing shop on them!

It doesn't cost much to get a used one. Found an 07 with 7k miles for $33k

By affording one take kids into account. I can afford a vette, but until middle age, I'll have kids to drive around.

Most people pay more than that for a tahoe or expedition. This was a car with only 7,000 miles on it. Basically new still. I know kids cost though trust me.
