2010 LA AUTO SHOW PREVIEW: Mercedes-Benz Preps CLS 63 AMG
It wasn't so long ago that we brought you some hotly anticipated photographs of the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class four-door coupe. And, although there are debates on whether the car's exterior looks are good or bad, you cannot say the interior is poor.

The quality is absolutely insane.

But Mercedes' little party is not over, just yet. It has confirmed that it's AMG-labeled sibling, the CLS63, will be making an appearance in the City of Angels. Likely the CLS AMG will be powered by the new bi-turbo V8 and make 518 horsepower. However, if that doesn't fulfill your desires word on the street suggests that there will be an optional package that will dial up the power to 550 horsepower. Think of it like the current C63's AMG Development package that adds 30 ponies.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the world debut of its next-generation CLS63 AMG sports sedan at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, open to the public November 19-28. The German maker also revealed that it will make an announcement on the U.S. rollout of its fuel cell-powered F-CELL car.

The yet to be shown 2011 CLS63 AMG model (the standard CLS is pictured above), which is based on the second generation of Merc's so-called "four-door coupe", will be powered by a new 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine matched to a MCT (multi-clutch technology) transmission. In base form, the biturbo V8 churns out 518 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque, but there's also an optional Performance Package that increases output to 550 hp and 590 lb.-ft. of torque...

Why do I have a feeling that this car's time has come and gone? I know it seems like ten other car companies have, or will shortly, introduce cars based on this "cab-rearward" design language, but I'm done.

In fact, is a design language based in style more than in function...and It came to stay....The success of CLS is so good that EVERYBODY is trying to follow MB on this.

The interior looks great...I hope the quality is there. The exterior continues to reflect MB's insecurity about how to design...first the SLS copy of one of the most famous designs in history because MB is too insecure to design a "fresh" car, and now the new CLS which is so close to being a hot looking car but it just has too many styling cues...even Hyundai is moving away from all that..it is almost like a circa '90's Pontiac Bonniville SSI.

The grill and shape of the hood make the car look unbelievably bloated. Im not feeling this new design.

Ah, so you work in the MB design department and know about the internal insecurities their designers are experiencing, eh?

Get real. Ever heard of RETRO DESIGN? The SLS is supposed to look like a modern version of the 300SL Gullwing. Insecurities my ass.

Yes I have heard of a Retro Design...it is usually used by car companies that have no idea what to do with their next project..so they opt for something safe..something that has already been done. You just proved my point. Thank you.

folks look at this CLS and the outgoing version of the CLS and highlight the similarities of the two which confirms insecurity. if you look at this new one you will see how much creativity was put into this car. Merc cleary took the risk of creating a totally different car from the outgoing one so if you want to talk of insecurity look elsewhere like bmw and audi who change the subtle details on the old models and call them predecessors. This new CLS shows the ability of the designer to think outside the box and manage to mantain the balance of the overall car shape and the styling cues. folks lets learn to be objective and not negativily criticise vehicles because we are anti-merc or because we cannot accept and embrace change.
