2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco Achieves Segment-Leading 42 MPG On The Highway
GM released the official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco. So, the new car was rated by EPA to 42 mpg on the highway (manual transmission models) and 28 mpg in the city. With these numbers, the 2011 Cruze Eco beats the competition, such as the Honda Civic, or the Ford Fiesta subcompact but also many hybrid models like Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.

For those who don’t know, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine delivering 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 rpm and 4,900 rpm, and mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Because this will be stripped and the Volt will be loaded, because they want the 'smug' feeling Prius drivers have had for about a decade, because they have more money than brains.

Lots of reasons really.

The volt is bigger than prius so it being a compact car is ludicrous.

No it isn't. UAW, both the Cruze and Volt are Delta based sedans. See below for the size comparisons.

Volt Cruze
Length 170 in 181 in
Height 52.6 in 58.1 in
Width 70.5 in 70.7 in

The Volt is clearly a compact.

"Current compact car size, for US and international models respectively, is approximately 4,100 mm (161 in) and 4,450 mm (175 in) long for hatchbacks, or 4,400 mm (173 in) and 4,750 mm (187 in) long for convertibles, sedans (saloon) or station wagons (estate car). Multi-purpose vehicles and sport utility vehicles based on small family cars (often called compact MPVs and compact SUVs) have similar sizes, ranging from 4,200 mm (165 in) to 4,500 mm (177 in) in the U.S., and from 4,400 mm (173 in) to 4,700 mm (185 in) in international-based models."

The Volt and the Cruze are meant for two completely different market segments. Very few people will be cross-shopping them. Simply put, the Volt is for eco-snobs and the Cruse ..... isn't.
