2011 Elantra Slips Out From Under The Covers: Who Should Be Worried Now?

2011 Elantra Slips Out From Under The Covers: Who Should Be Worried Now?
The hotly anticipated 2011 Hyundai Elantra is about to make its official debut next week in Los Angeles. With the runaway success of the midsize Hyundai Sonata, this smaller sedan has a lot of Hyundai admirers licking their chops, waiting to see if this Korean automaker can keep up its recent momentum and deliver another solid hit.

In fact, the anticipation is so great that over the past couple of days numerous automotive websites have been running a silly photo of one of Hyundai's reps looking mock-shocked that the new 2012 Elantra behind him has been discovered. It's a shameless tease that is totally scripted and set up for the cameras. Besides that, the car is still almost completely covered with camo.

Hyundai has definitely emerged into a mainstream manufacturer and a viable competitor right in the middle of the market. Their news cars are good looking. Still, as nice looking as they are, they're not totally original at this stage of their development. I find myself wondering how these recent designs will age. All things considered, though, I have to admit, they're doing a magnificent job. They're hitting right at the meat of their segments and the products seem to be getting more refined.

Now *that's* ugly! Is this styling a cultural thing, being a hit in Korea?

I need better angles on the front. It could be too aggressive or just a little ugly.

Cars that will loose some sales to this Elantra:

Toyota Corolla, Yaris Sedan, Prius if Hyundai releases a hybrid
Honda Civic, Base Accord
Mitsubishi Lancer
Nissan Sentra, Versa
Mazda 3
Ford Focus
GM Cruze

WOW! So Original, So Bold and so well executed! Ford, GM and Toyota out classed again! Glad to see an underdog succeed, hopefully the competition can keep up.

Looks to be a baby Sonata. And as good as that model is selling this model could see a similar popularity boost.

I find the design language a bit confusing. The car dose not look bad but reminds me of a smiling melting bullfrog.

Impressive. Current competition is outdated and looking for new models, the Civic, Corolla, Focus, Sentra are all out. The new Focus does not come on scene until late spring next year (maybe), and some pics on the net of the 2011 Civic are pretty disappointing. Corolla and Sentra don't even deserve a mention as they are both beige.

Now if they can just be smart and drop in the 4cyl. turbo from the Sonata with a 6 speed it would be a slick little fun car.

I hope they have built this in a Hatchback for me. If not then next month I'm off to the Hyundai dealearship to buy a 2011 Sonata. I just took one out for test flight this week and must say the new Venetian Red metalic paint is so amazing it's a dangerous distraction. Can't stop staring at it as it glistens in the sun. The 34 mpg I got on the test drive didn't hurt either.
Still, a baby Sonata if it does more mpg's and $10,000 less than the Sonata would seal the deal for one.

Hyundai continues to perform impressively. Their design language is now far better than the volume players out of Japan and their pricing is far more competitive. I think Hyundai rediscovered what the Americans, Europeans and Japanese forgot: US Sales = Attractive Design / Materials + Value Pricing + Reliability. Most people aren't performance enthusiasts and won't really care if the car is just a shade slower or doesn't go through the slalom as quickly as another car. I think this car will do well and really impact the Sentra, Corolla, Lancer, Cruze and to a certain extent the Civic. I think the Mazda 3 and some elements of the Civic range are more performance oriented and appeal to a different set of drivers.

Hyundai is kicking ass. I have a hunch that the new Civic will be out-classed in some areas. Good for all of us. The competition heats up and the product gets better.

This is nice looking. I wonder if the 2.0 turbo from the Genesis (210hp) or the Sonata (274hp) will find its way in? And I'd just love to see what Kia does with their version...
