Holy Crap! Fisker's Karma Plug In To Weigh In Over 5,000 Lbs

The Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid is a relative heavyweight at more than 5,000 pounds, said a board member and the chief executive of the company’s powertrain supplier.

“It’s a pretty heavy car,” said Jason Forcier, vice president of A123 Systems, Fisker Automotive’s battery supplier, and a Fisker board member. “But you have to look at all the technology, which includes a large gas engine, large electric motors and large batteries.”

David Mazaika, chief executive of Quantum Technologies, which is supplying the company’s Q-Drive powertrain, said that prototypes weighed “over 5,000 pounds,” but he cautioned that because of ongoing work on many components the final car might actually weigh less than that.

In my opinion, any Fisker is "bad karma." With derivative designs for the rich, they have followed the classic "Rich boy wanna be a car maker" recipe, including the ongoing need for cash infusion to stay alive, and getting nowhere close to the smell of profitability.

So now, Fisker is trying to capitalize on the plug-in car hype. I say massive fail. Someone poke me when this company finally folds.

Seems like they got themselves into a death spiral...

Need more power to maintain performance due to high weight ....
Need bigger motors for more power ....
Bigger motors require bigger batteries ....
Bigger batteries increase weight....

And repeat - Need more power to maintain performance due to high weight ....

Calm down! Though I still think this car is vaporware until I see one with plates and tags, but I'm sure they've gotten the weight below that of used H1.

Fisker, like all auto manufacturers(listen closely MB, I'm looking at you), should put their vehicles on a diet. Weight goes down, Performance(including fuel economy) goes up!

Weight is no surprise here. It is large car (but very svelte looking) and weights in close the BMW 7 series hybrid.

When is somebody going to do an honest accounting of the environmental impact and cost to society of dismantling one of these electric behemoths when they reach the end of their useful lives ? Its a dirty little secret the politically correct don't want to disclose.
